Re: Fuel problem

Hi, LeeBob.

Your fuel pump is the prime suspect here, but it could also be:

Some restriction in a line, filter or fuel pickup that the fuel pump can't overcome,

An air leak somewhere in the fuel lines or

A plugged up or closed vent on your fuel tank.

Inspect carefully for all of the others, if you find nothing overhaul your fuel pump.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel problem

leebob,

I believe your 150 has dual fuel pumps. Rebuilding both would be inexpensive.

Also, don't forget about the tank to engine hose. The fuel primer bulb has a check valve in it. If it's stuck open, the fuel pumps will have difficulty holding a prime.
The bulb should remain firm while thew engine is running.

The fuel connector is also suspect.

Re: Fuel problem

Thanks,I did check the carbs they are clean, but there is a rubber gasket on top of the carbs that look like they have been sucked in to the chambers .Is this a problem?.Also this engine had vro but has been removed and plugged can I rebuild this pump also where is the best and most reasonable place to buy a rebuild kit I only see one fuel pump ,you all have been a great help.

Re: Fuel problem

LeeBob.

Check out that fuel pump thoroughly.

When disabling the VRO one of the tasks required is to plug the oil inlet to the pump. If it is not plugged securely the pump will mix air with the fuel and cause exactly the symptoms you have.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel problem

I put a new plug on the oil inlet,so I am pretty sure its not getting air there ,Does this fuel pump work off of a vacuum or pressure?

Re: Fuel problem

I think that one works off of crankcase pulses (pressure and vacuum). Three carbs are a lot to feed with one fuel pump, so it needs to be A-one.

I know that there are fuel-only pumps for the V4s but I am not sure about the V6s. If they are available you might consider swapping pumps.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel problem

I checked with a OMC dealer about my pump .He recommended doing away with the vro pump that has been plugged and going with 2 aftermarket pumps for a cost of $38.00 ea. do you all see any future problems by going this route.Does the 2nd f-pump tie in with the other f-pump or does it feed a certain carb. Thanks a bunch you all have been great!

Re: Fuel problem

I have an idea .Tell me what you think ,rebuilding the plugged vro pump and installing a new second pump ,will these restrict each other .there is a place on the block to put the 2nd pump higher on the block above the other one ,I had an older 150 johnson this is how it was rigged ,but it was not vro .

Re: Fuel problem

I think I have cured my fuel problem. With the advise from you guys and a local boat mech. we found that the 2 new pumps i would have to purchase would be rather expensive so he told me to try something he had tried on approx. 6 other simular engines .I found a (master fuel systems) dealer and installed a variable pressure electronis fuel pump .I ran it about 3 1/2 hours saturday and didn't cut out but 1 time when i planned out the first time (air in line ).thanks guys and I will let you know how it holds up...leebob

when all else fails Go Fishing :)

Electric fuel pumps are o-k, just be sure the wiring is failsafe,it shuts off in an emergency.

c/6

Hooty
