POWER TILT TROUBLES

I HAVE A 77 115HP EVINRUDE, SUDDENLY LAST SAT. THE POWER TILT WOULDN'T RAISE,ONLY LOWER. AFTER CLOSER INSPECTION, I BELIEVE THE ELECTRIC MOTOR IS BAD ON THE PUMP.CAN I REPLACE JUST THE ELECTRIC MOTOR? MAYBE TAKE THE MOTOR OFF AND BRING IT IN TO A ELECTRIC MOTOR REPAIR SHOP?? ALSO IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN RAISE/LOWER THE MOTOR TO USE THE BOAT WITHOUT GETTINGIN THE WATER TO RAISE IT WHEN LAUNCHING OR TAKING THE BOAT OUT OF THE WATER? ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED THANKS

you can replace just the motor, when you do; make sure you clean the space where you are going to put motor in, including new O-ring. <br /><br />there is a release screw/valve in the starboard side of the unit that you need to loosen up whenever you need to manually move the motor. if you can reach it from the boat, then you do not have to get into the water.

Hi Damaging: Before I went to the trouble to remove the motor I would make sure it is bad and not a switch or solenoid. Check and see if you have voltage heading to the motor leads themselves first. Might save a lot of time, trouble and money.

Damaging,<br />Does the motor seem to run when you hit the switch. If not it may be the switch or something else electrical. There are solenoids and such with the tilt.<br /><br />Scott

If it lowers, then I don't believe it's the Motor. I would lean toward the "UP" selonoid! Switch the selonoids around and see if it will go up, but not down. If so, you've found your problem!

Hi Damaging,<br />Rickbd1boats has the right answer, if the motor runs in one direction it should run in the opposite direction. Even if the motor was bad I would repair it myself. Those motors are a simple affair, I just rebuilt one for myself today. About the only thing that would cost a lot of money is if the rotor was shorted, or the winding were destroyed. Clean up the commutator, new brushes and springs, and a new o-ring; sure beats paying 100+ dollars for a new one. What usually causes them to go bad is water ingestion ( bad seal on the o-ring at the bottom of the motor).<br />Good Luck

thanks for all your help, i am going to start working on it today, the motor won't go up or down now and i am getting power to the motor so i'm pretty sure it is the motor, i don't know much about electric motors but i am going to try rebuilding it myself, there are switches in three diffrent locations so i know it's not a switch

Are you SURE it's not the up selonoid? Have you switched the two selonoid? The up one for the down one and visa versa. If one is bad it would then only go up and not down. Sounds like the motor works in the down direction. Be sure to check this first. Not sure where the're located on your motor; probably near top. I was not sure this was clear to you. Incidently capital letters means your 'SHOUTING'. Hope you get it fixed.

hello damaging...the way i tested my motor was to put 12 volts across the two wires of the motor and see if it moves, then switch the wires and it should move in the opposite direction. if it moves in both directions...its not the motor.

I had the exact same problem with my tilt this spring. It turned out to be the rocker switch in the handle. Found the problem using the good old multi tester and checked both sides of the switch for OHMS. No OHMS bad switch.
