I will be going along 80% power and the motor will die at 1.5 mile along route. Try starting it - hard to start - will start after cranking 15 - 20 minutes. Go along about 20/25% power will die, then start and die. Changed the fuel filter and plugs. Dies like you turn the key off, no warning.
1990 VRO Evinrude 70 hp dies - hard to start

Hi, Gene.

Did you try pumping your primer bulb? Have you checked the venting on the fuel tank and the fuel pickup?

1.5 miles sounds like just about the time required to suck a vacuum in an unvented tank.

Let us know what you find. :)

I have a 24 foot pontoon with a inboard gas tank. I have changed the line and it seems to be pumping up OK. I put a new fuel filter on it (clear) and I can see gas. How can I check any kind of fire? (New plugs)

Hi Gene.

Let me try again.

Did you try pumping the primer bulb while the engine was misbehaving?

Did you verify that the fuel tank is properly vented? :)

Yes, my wife was pumping on the fuel line. There is fuel in the fuel filter.

Hi, Gene.

Okay, let's assume that there is nothing preventing fuel from getting to the fuel pump. Though there is still the possibility that there is a pinch in the fuel line somewhere.

It is very unlikely that a problem occurs in three carbs at the same time, so that leaves the fuel pump. Pull the output line from the fuel pump and see that it squirts fuel into a bottle when turned over. Do this only after running the equivalenbt of about 1.5 miles undwer load.

If there is any difficulty with this, loosen the fuel cap on the tank and try again.

Let us know what you find. :)

I had an older motor do the same thing, it would spontaneously cut out and then start a few minutes or several minutes later. It turned out to be a bad AMPLIFIER for the ignition system. When it got hot it would cut out, when it cooled off it worked fine. I dont know if you have one of these but I would eliminate a fuel problem before venturing to other things.

What type of electrical checks can I do? It seams like you just turn the key off. (I will not be able to do any work on it till Friday.)

OK, got to the lake this am. I changed the plugs again. I took out, the new Autolites 2634 and put in Champion L77JC4. it had Champion in it last year. At the first of this year I put the Autolites in it before ever using it. Well I hook up the garden hose to it and after a litlle cranking it started up, I let it run for about 5 minutes changing the rpm's alittle. Ran fine. Does not seam to have very much fuel in the fuel filter (clear filter), I pump it up and it does not change the way it runs, the filter fills up and then just has a little fuel in it, but keeps running fine. Inboard gas tank, screens (two about 3/8 in dia)on external port for the vent look fine and open.

Just had it running 35 minutes with no problems. I put some Marvel Mystery oil in a 5 gal can and pre-mixed it. Filled up the inboard gas tank. Keep changing the RPM's.

OK guys - I changed over to a 9 gal external gas tank. With the GPS running I went along .8 miles and it died. Started it and went along and died. Found out that if I went full out it went farther but runs rough. If I let it set about 15 minutes it will run at 50-70% fine for a while then start running rough like a plug it missing.

Had a boat shop look at it - said number 2 cyl had 10 pounds compression. Still do not understand why it would run good for a while then just die.
