1971 evinrude starflite 85hp 4cyl

Please any help would be great i have a 1971 evinrude 85 hp 4cyl and it has no spark i replaced the rotor button because the notch was missing off it. the previous owner replaced alot of the electrical parts. also when i try to start it it seems to be in reverse because the prop turns backwards .

Try starting it in neutral.

the engine is in neutral.i can push the buttons but it does not change the reverse problem.i have ridden in this boat before i bought it ,since i bought it has sat for about a year. does it have a neutral safety switch.

i have this same engine.. are you using a type "c" gear case lube? this is important for electronic shift engines. if you use a regular gear lube (not type "c") the engine will either not shift or will shift into gears by itself.
