I replaced the water pump impeller late last season. In starting for the first time this season, pump won't **** water. Any ideas? Many thanks

may be the tell-tale passage is plugged. If you can hold your hand on the top of the head for a few seconds, it's cooling. Look for water coming out of the exhaust port on the back of the leg.

If it's not overheating, you can try opening the tell-tale with a small wire or blowing it out with compressed air.

Thanks Oldboat1 for your early reply. Forgive my ignorance though, where is the tell-tale passage?

It's also known as the pee hole. If you are in your boat looking back at your engine it should be on the bottom left side. It will have a small nipple surrounded by a rubber seal.

Obstruction may be somewhere between pick up tube from water pump to powerhead. Borrowed my friend's 7.5 Evinrude and it would not pump water. After replacing the impellor and checking for obstruction with compressed air (checked passages at exhaust cover and thermostat housing) all that was left was to pull powerhead as I was told that sometimes the sealing grommet/gasket? swells shut. Shuddered at that option. I double stranded some .032 wire and used a low speed cordless drill on the end of it and roto rootered up the pick up tube into the powerhead. It worked. With exhaust cover off, compressed air then blew out the obstruction. Worked for me, don't know if it was a good or bad thing to do. The motor worked great throughout our fishing trip.

Had a Dirt Daubber make a home in my 25's wee hole
. Just poke something up the hole to make sure there's no obstruction.

I replaced the water pump impellor on the shaft, but it appears not to turn with the shaft. Is it suppose to turn independantly or with the rotation of the drive shaft

Hi, and welcome to iboats.
Next time, please do not drag up a 3 1/2 year old thread and ask an unrelated question. You will get much better help if you start a new thread.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes the impeller must turn with the drive shaft to the crank. There is a key that fits into the driveshaft that locks the impeller to the drive shaft. PN is 344470 for a 1987 40hp.
