1979 Johnson 65 hp....holes?

I recently acquired a 1981 Boston Whaler with a 1979 Johnson 65 hp motor. I am very, very inexperienced at motors and this question may be ridiculous. On the back of the motor are two holes that I am not sure if water is supposed to be coming out of or not. I started it up in the driveway and everythings seems to working okay; needs a little tuning up though. Just not sure if these two holes are supposed to have water coming out of them or not? The holes, 1/2" size, are above the water line towards the bottom of the motor. I would appreciate any input on this. Thanks.

Those are the exhaust bypass holes. Yes, water will come out of them. Water is used to cool the exhaust.

Hi Kim,
You probably won't see any water come out of those holes till the motor is in the water. With just the muffs on it in the driveway you may not see anything come out there.

Good luck

HI, Water may or may not come out of those holes, As t.h. wrote, they are exhaust bypass holes, exhaust gasses need to be vacated from the engine at idle speed, there is not enough pressure to push the gasses out thru the prop area. Water mixes with the exhaust close to that area, but may or may not come out the holes.

If water is not coming out with the exhaust be very careful. You said you inherited the boat. How long was it sitting? I would replace the impellar at the very least. Very cheap and a great do it yourself job. For a quick judge if your motor is getting to hot place your hand on the head you should be able to keep it there for a few seconds with out any pain.

Good Luck

Took the boat out, but only at "no wake" speed. Too afraid to do anything else. Yes, the boat did sit for a few years. Water never did come out of the exhaust bypass holes, possibly because I was hesitant to go any faster. The head never did get hot where I couldn't touch it. Ran it for about 2 hours. I think the it would have seized up otherwise. Still going to replace the impellar though because it was sitting so long. Thanks for the great advice everyone, really appreciate it.
