On the back of my 1972 Evinrude 9.5 Hp, there is a hole that is made from rubber, and it comes from the motor. Usually, water shoots out of this hole when the motor is running, so I assume this is the exhaust hole? Today when I ran my motor, only hot exhaust came out from the hole, like a car exhaust. When I took the hood off of the motor, a little bit of steam was coming up...is this from water spashing up on the motor? Can someone tell me what the problem is? Thanks

Brent

Re: Evinrude 9.5 water pump

I forgot to mention that I have been running the motor in a garbage can full of water for a couple of days. It was pumping spurts water yesterday, but not today. Does this have anything to do with it?

Are you sure that the water in the bin was over the cavitation plate, or that the water pick-ups were submerged? My buddies old merc 9.9 barely spits when at a low idle and then has a nice stream when given some gas. When you are in the water under load, you will be using a higher rpm which will give you a better flow. Make sure your pickups are submerged.

Are the water pickups right below that plate that fans out above the propeller on the lower unit? Yesterday when it was idling, it did spit out some water like usual, bot today all i could feel coming out was hot exhaust. Thanks

Brent

Brent,
Sounds to me like the therm may be stuck, or the impeller needs replaced, that motor should allways have water coming out of it. if no water dont run it. Imepllers and Therms are cheap. pretty easy to install and routine maintance. Let me know if you need any help but I would guess you need to replace the impeller and the Therm and you will have good water flow again. e-mail me if you need anything. gra6961@usa.net
