Hi,

I'm new here. I've been reading the posts recently and have found tons of information. I tried to search the forum for a possible answer to my question but didn't find anything so I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with a perplexing problem.

I have an old Johnson 3hp Model JW 22 C on my boat for a while now and it has been bullet proof! Till yesterday...

It seemed that the motor is running on one cylinder. I checks the plugs and the one from the bottom cylinder was fouled. I cleaned them and tried again. Still not right. I rotated them top to bottom and bottom to top but it still didn't run right. I pulled, cleaned, and adjusted the carb. Still not running right. So I rechecked the plugs. It seems that the spark plug wire to the bottom cylinder doesn't create the same amount of spark as the top one. The plug is wet so it's getting fuel. I think that my problem is either a bad plug wire, or something with the points or ect. Does it sound like this might be the problem? I can't seem to get the flywheel off the top of the motor to get to the electrical stuff. I removed the three screws and nut from the top but it doesn't want to budge. So I can't tell what condition the wires are in.

Any info would be a great help!!!

Peace
iMac

Re: Johnson 3hp problems

iMacattact
It is a 1967. Your lack of fire on one cylinder is probably due to a bad coil and or points and or condensers. If you plan on keeping it, replace the points and condensers, if the coils show any cracking, replace them both and the wires. Then you are ready for years of good spark. You need a flywheel puller to remove the flywheel to do the service work. Get a manual at any dealer, Seloc
1.5hp-40hp 1956-1970 Johnson/Evinrude will do fine. Backfire ;)

backfire,

Thanks for the reply! :D Do you know if parts for that motor are hard to find? I'm a real DIY kind of person and love to tinker. Or is this something a service person should do? The motor has worked flawlessly for a while and would like to keep it in running condition. Also the flywheel puller, are they readily available to the average person or is this a speciality tool only for the motor repare trade?

Thanks in advance for all of your help!!! :D

Peace
iMac

Imac, NAPA has 87 pages of E/J parts most likely have what you need for yours.
Have fun.

Re: Johnson 3hp problems

My buddy and I made a puller out of some large washers and some old bolts welded together for a similar motor...worked perfect.

read the TOP SECRET FILE, many of your questions are answered in detail there, then ask what you are unclear about.

Re: Johnson 3hp problems

you can use a stearing weeler puller! to get it off
You can use a steering wheel puller if you want a broken flywheel. You can use a harmonic balancer puller, with 1/4-20, grade 8 bolts if you want to do it right.
Look at the "Top Secret" post at the top of the forum for the procedure.
