Does anyone know anything about MFG boats? I just bought a 1971 mfg 12ft glass boat and have no idea what the max hp is for this boat (I have seen similar whaler’s with 40-50hp on them) The transom is very thick, and the 6hp evinrude it came with has to have the screws turned all the way back tight just to get it on the transom. Is an MFG a good boat?

It stands for Moulded Fiberglass Products...they were one of the first fiberglass boats. You see a lot of them still around, so there must have done something right. On a 12' boat I would be reluctant to put more than 20-25 HP tops. The weight becomes an issue in the back. I used to have a 13' Whaler that I put a 50 Merc on and it flew, but was overpowered...also too heavy. If you want to have a good usable boat watch the weight...possibleably 18 HP. Good luck with your new (old) boat! ;)

This boat is as solid as a rock, and as heavy as one too ……I paid $250 for it with a working 6hp evinrude . My original intensions were to use it to get out to my mooring, but it seems like it would be a waste of a good boat.
