I have a 98-Johnson 9.9.When I first start out I'm running at 5800 rpms. When the engine runs for awhile and warms up my RPMS drop down to 5000 RPMS.If I stop and fish for awhile then start the engine it runs at 5600 to 5800 again then drops down to 5000 after warming up.The plugs are new but I check them anyways. The bottom plug looked like it was oily ,like it's not getting enough spark.

COULD this be a COIL problem or a POWERPACK problem or other?.............THANKS.

P.S.- this is my first post to this site. GOOD SITE. :)

Or too much fuel. Is your mixture correct? 50:1. How is your other plug burning? Do you run wide open for a short or long time? Could be overheating and trying to bind up. Have you done a compression test? We need a little more info if you can.
I'm glad you like the site. I proud of the people who have worked in this field for years donating their expertise.

FIREMAN 757:
1.Fuel mixture is right 50:1
2.Top plug is burning normal
3.Never did a compression test{i'm a rookie at repairs} :(
4.I really don't run it long because all the places I fish are 5 mins to 10 mins away from where I put in.
5.Water flow is real good also.

Thanks for answering.

You could have a weak ignition coil or powerpack. Switch the wires on your coils and see if the problem appears on the other plug. If it does replace that coil and repost the results.

You can always run it in a barrel rain or shine!!
Also if you do this you don't have to worry if the plug is in or not.

FIREMAN757:Switched plug wires around and the top didn't burn very good this time. There is a coil for each spark plug right? I swear I can find only one.

You have a powerpack. Replace this and you'll be back on the water inside an hour.

Glad it worked. Don't forget to put the plug in.
