My motor has good compression all around (120+). It starts good and idles good. The boat gets up on to step fine and runs smooth for a few minutes. Then all of a sudden it will bog down and die. Then it will start right up again and continue to repeat this process. Fuel problem? Coil?

sounds like fuel problem,

If you keep pumping the primer bulb, does it keep running smooth? if so then you need to look at fuel pump and maybe the lines...

do it logically, clear the fuel system of blame first, then look at the ignition system.

Check and clean all your electrical connections, (I consider that regular maintenance).

If the problem is there, its time to fire up the multimeter and start checking things.

rgds

Frank

Re: 1976 Johnson 85 hp

I am having a hard time determining if it is my fuel pump, when I pump the primer bulb the rpm's pick up a little. I will change out my fuel line and check my vent on the gas tank see where that takes me. When I run the motor out of the water it runs fine and does not bog down. It only seems to be bogging out and quiting when I am running up on step in the water. ????

I appreciate your advise Franki.

Dillon

Frank nailed it right on the money. Now consider a fuel pump rebuild kit. Changing out the fuel line probably will not help. I bet it is the small diaphram in the fuel pump.

Bob

Re: 1976 Johnson 85 hp

I changed out the fuel pump. It needed to be replaced but that did not solve my problem. The boat gets up on step and runs fine for a few minutes and then it bogs down and dies. Then it will usually start right back up and run fine for a little ways and then die. I am noticing a little lack in power, but I have real good compression. There is a little noise coming from under neath the fly wheel. Could it be my stater, ignition related....

Ak Dillon

Swap your coil wires and check for spark. I'm betting one is breaking down and arcing to the block.
