Hi all from a newbie to boating.

First I'd like to say how great the information & help given on this board is. I have learned alot just by reading alot of the other q's & a's.

Now, for my questions.

I have just come across a 1969 Johnson 55hp engine. It is one of the hydro-electrics.

When I shift from N to Fwd, there is some play in the shift, then the shift/throttle guns up the engine. BUT it doesn't shift into gear until it is almost at WOT.

Once in gear it stays there until I shift it out.

Is this normal? At what kind of range/trottle should it pop into gear? Could the shift problem be due to incorrect oil in the gears? If so, now that I'm POSITIVE it's Type C will it clear out the shifting problem?

The guy I got the engine from told be about a small plunger in the lower case that has come out of place and just needs to be reset.

Could this be true & if so how often does this happen? How hard is it to pop off the lower & reset it?

I have read up about the oil and have changed it so I was positive it was the Type C required.

Also it won't hold a low speed idle (bogs out) so I'll have to check the settings for that, but I don't really want to be fiddling with it in the water and screw up my gears with this shift problem.

I really do like the engine, and want to keep it properly maintained and running for as long as I can. She powers the 16' Starcraft great!

Any help from and Johnson masters would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Let me be the first to welcome you to the board Senor Gamble. The best advise Hooty can offer you is to get at least a shop manual for that engine and perferably the parts book as well. It (the parts book) has exploded views of everything. With the manual(s) you can look and see how the thing is suppose to work and then we can go from there.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks Hooty!

I have a manual. It's not the original, but a "Seloc" that covers Johnny/Evinrudes from 58-72 including the 55 Hp Hydro Electrics. It mentions the plunger, but only that it extends down into the hydraulic pump on the 55s & 60s. It doesn't talk about it being a problem where it pops off though.

It does get into how to take apart & re-assemble all the different engines, lower units & different types of shifts.

Hello.
The way you shift into gear is far from normal. In fact it may prove disastrous for your lower unit to be kicked in the rear like that.It should be a smooth process at low rpm. I do not think that a wrong type of oil could cause this.
The seller is right in that something has come out of place and needs to be reset. But not without you having a manual right next to you while you do it.
Lower units are easily taken apart. If you are afraid of doing something wrong ,you should get a camera and shoot "before" and "after" pictures so you can correct yourself in case you went wrong.
Good luck.

Re: 1969 Johnson 55 Hp Hydro-Electric...HELP

Thanks again guys...

Well I pulled the lower unit. Looking at the manual & what I had all looked ok...

I started to reassemble and whammo there is was... I think!

The two rods (plungers) that go through the solenoids when replaced are to cover off the top of the solenoids. They were about 1/8 to 1/4 inches lower and recessed into the solenoids.

I'm thinking that this is the problem. The reason that I can figure is that it required more oil pressure (hense the higher revs) to pop it into gear.

Does anyone know if I am on track with this line of thought?

Ok. I've re-assembled it & nada.

Help?

I'm getting the proper power to the solenoid wires. The prop turns by hand when the engine is off. I get no "chunk" of it going into gear (either gear) at low idle (from Neutral). The only way for it to go into gear is at a high rev.
