Re: veteran evinrude 15
Alone.... You should check the compression and spark, and also the lower unit lube. Do not remove a philips screw if it exists in the lower unit skeg as that is a shoulder bolt shift lever pivot point screw.

You can check the copmpression with a gauge (prefered) or simply feel that the compression is sufficent and even on both cylinders. If with a gauge, it should approach 80 to 100 psi.

The spark should jump a 1/4" gap on a magneto system and a 7/16" gap on a CD ignition system (with the spark plugs removed).

Your explanation of the problem indicates that you have a fouled, clogged, gummed carburetor. If so, the cure is to remove, clean, and rebuild it.

To find out exactly what the engine is, we will need the model number. It should be located on a plate on either the left (port) transom bracket (the bracket that attaches to the boat), or on the front of the swivel bracket (the bracket the engine turns/swivels on). There may also be a core plug (looks like a small quarter size freeze out plug) on the powerhead itself with that same number.

Once we know that number, you can obtain a manual, gain information about the engine, order the proper parts, etc.
