I have what I suspect is a lower end problem. When I give the engine more gas while in gear (forward or reverse), engine "revs up" but speed remains slow...in other words, engine remains at a slow speed even when I give it gas to increase speed...the engine increases RPM without increasing speed...I suspect it is a problem with the dog clutch...is this suspicion correct or is it another problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Respectfully

fishonagain

I think you've got a spun hub. Check this page:
http://marinemechanic.com/omc/prop_hub.htm

Take off your propeller and mark the prop and the splined insert. Put it back on again and put a gear in forward or reverse until it happens again. Take it off and see if the mark is still aligned.

That will rule out the propeller.

Thanks for your advice...after removing the foward thrust seal on the prop (which I did not know you could do and discoverd by accident), I could see that the hub was spun...the rubber had deteriorated...I purchased a new prop and kept the old one to be rehubbed later...the new prop was the ticket and the boat runs great...thanks again for your advice...simple solution...by the way, my lower end seems to leak oil a bit around the prop and when I change the lower end oil...it sometimes is a little milky...i suspect it is indicative of a bad seal but I have read that having a little water in the lower unit is not uncommon...what do you think? Sorry it took so long to reply, my home drive crashed hard and alll my applications had to be reinstalled)

respectfully,

Fishonagain

fishonagain,I agree. You probably have a leaking propshaft seal.Bare in mind that while motor is submerged that water is leaking in.

Thanks ob...that's what I suspected...gotta take it in for a seal change because of the seal puller tool and other special tools needed  ...to buy em new would cost almost as much as having them put in...all in all though, the little motor has done great by me...just a side note...I'm from Texas too! grew up in Houston, I love Corpus :) ...in fact, the my first speckled trout came from Port Aransas...24" ...talk to ya later...I do miss Texas, though. :(

fishonagain

A little milky? Sure it can be a bad seal. Last time you changed the oil, did you replace the nylon washers at the oil and oil level plug? I do that every year.
Let's hope it is just the washers :)
