Anything i should be looking for?

72 mako,

This may not be the problem, but give it a try. It won't cost you anything.

Find the large negative battery cable and trace it into the engine. It attaches to the engine block.

Remove the attaching bolt and clean everything up. Reattach and give it a try.

The crossflow v-4's were known for this connection getting corroded.

djohns, lights and tilt up/down are working fine, so the big negative connection on engine block is not it, besides i cleaned it last week. please try again....

72 mako 19,

The lights ( I'm assuming running lights and guage backlights) are on a seperate circuit-they don't go through the engine.

You say, the motor won't start? Does that mean it won't turn over at all?

If so, I believe you may have an ignition switch problem. The switch "energizes" the guages and of course it starts the engine.

Can you hear the primer solonoid click when you push the key in?

Did you disconnect and reconnect the big red connector under the cowl also? If not, DON'T do it unless the battery is disconnected. As a matter of fact-DON'T disconnect anything unless the batt. is disconnected..

djohns, engine will not turn over at all, and solenoid does not click. replaced the ignition switch and the horn and still the same problem.

when i say lights, i mean the gauge back lights and the boat lights.
