Removing Engine Block from 115 Johnson Outboard

I'm rebuilding a 1974 V4 115 Johnson. I've removed the flywheel, carbs, starter motor, dropped the gearcase, removed all the electrics, and am trying to separate the engine block from the lower end of the engine. The shop manual is not entirely clear regarding what fasteners need to be removed to accomplish this. I've removed all those that I think they have referred to, plus any others that I could find. Tell us which bolts and nuts you have removed from the adaptor plate. There should be 3 long bolts on each side - 1 small bolt and 1 stud with a nut on each side toward the front - and 2 studs with nuts in the rear.<br /><br />With the gearcase off nothing else should be holding it on. <br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks for the reply<br /><br />I've removed the three long bolt each side, and the all of the bolts and nuts holding the adaptor onto the head. <br />Still no luck .

Have you dropped the lower unit? Under ideal situations it is not necessary, but if<br />you find you can't drop it, you know the drive shaft has "bonded" to the crankshaft.<br /><br />And they can be a bit of a ***** to seperate. Can you winch the motor up off the <br />mid housing?<br /><br />Good luck,<br />Mike

Put the flywheel and flywheel nut back on. Bolt your flywheel puller on to the flywheel and use this and a engine hoist to lift the engine. I made a lifting eye that screws into the center of the puller to lift with. Needless to say, this is a lot easier to do if the engine is still on the boat rather than a engine stand.<br /><br />g'luck & c/6<br /><br />Hooty<br /><br />Hooty

If indeed you have all the bolts and nuts out I described then it should come right off. There may be some corroision around the front and rear studs but with your lift hooked up and pressure on you can GENTLY pry on the studs. It will come right off.<br /><br />Double check the bolt / nut count. 6 long bolts - 2 short bolts - 4 nuts.<br /><br />Good luck!
