OK HERE IS MY SITUATION. FIRST IM JUST A POOR YOUNG MAN TRYING TO GET HIS BOAT BACK UP AND RUNNING. I GOT A 95 INTRUDER 150 AND I NEED A POWERHEAD, BUT I HAVE FOUND A 99 JOHNSON FASTSTRIKE 150 FOR $3500 WITH MY MOTOR ON TRADE IN. I ALSO FOUND A 99 MERCURY XR6 150 FOR $4500. SAME DEALER. WHICH IS MY MOST EFFICIANT ROUTE? IM NEW IN THE BOATING WORLD . THIS MOTOR WOULD GO ON A 95 18FT JAVELIN.BOTH MOTORS COME WITH A 30 DAY MONEY BACK WARRANTY. THANK YOU

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

You did not say what engine you need a powerhead for? Also you did not say what kind of shape its in. Usually its cheaper and faster to install a re-built powerhead than changing engine, controls and wiring.

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

I would agree with Trent about rebuilding your 95 150. Check into it first so you know where you are. Then its easy to see which way to go.

If its getting water in #1 it can be fixed. As long as the crank is good and the block is boreable its usually less expensive to rebuild.

Also keep in mind that to change brands usually requires a different control box, throttle and shift cables and wiring harness. Make sure thats included in the price.

Good luck!

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

I DID SAY WHAT ENGINE I NEED A PWERHEAD FOR. IT IS A 95 EVINRUDE 150 INTRUDER. I HAVE LOOKED FOR REBUILT POWERHEADS FOR THE MOTOR AND THEY ARE RANGING ANYWHERE FROM 2300 TO 3500. AND IF I PUT A JOHNSON IN PLACE OF AN EVINRUDE I DONT THINK I HAVE TO CHANGE THE CONTROLS . I MIGHT BE WRONG CORRECT ME IF I AM. WELL THE PLACE THAT HAS MY BOAT RIGHT NOW SAID IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO GET A REBUILT POWERHEAD. I WOULD HAVE TO GET A NEW CRANK ALL THE BEARINGS AND ALL KIND OF OTHER STUFF. HE SAID THE BLOCK IS RUINED. HE MIGHT BE FULL OF IT , BUT EITHER WAY IT GOES HE SAID IM LOOKING AT ABOUT 3000 AT LEAST. SO I FIGURED IT WOULD JUST BE BETTER TO GO AHEAD AND SPEND A LITTEL MORE AND GET A NEWER MOTOR. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME .

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

You are correct about Evinrude and Johnson. Both were produced by OMC and are the same as far as controls. I was refering to the Merc you mentioned vs the OMC brand for controls.

Just curious, what happened to the crank that it has to be replaced?

Good luck!

Hello fellow neck' from MS-
It sounds like you are set on getting a different motor. It does have its merits...99 vs 95. These guys trying to help you are some of the most knowledgeable on the board so remember - you asked for their advice. Dhadley makes a good point, make sure your dealer is including everything into his price quote on the conversion to different outboard. PS- Just a suggestion: capitals mean screaming on web boards. :)

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

OK THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY EVINRUDE. MY FOOT WENT OUT IN JUNE. OK I WAS TIGHT ON MONEY SO I BOUGHT A USED ONE INSTEAD OF A REBUILT ONE . WELL THE *******S I BOGHT IT FROM SOLD ME A WORTHLESS FOOT, IT WAS WORE OUT AND NO MATTER HOWI ADJUSTED IT IT JUST WOULD STAY IN GEAR. SO I TRIED TO GET MY MONEY BACK AND THEY WOULDNT. THIS WAS LIKE A WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT IT . WELL THE NICE GUY THAT WORKED IN THE SHOP IN THE BUILDING , HELPED ME OUT AND GAVE ME ANOTHER ONE AND LET ME KEEP THE WORE OUT ONE . WELL HE SAID THEY WERE THE SAME SHAFT LENGTH, BUT IT TURNED OUT THIS ONE WAS A LITTLE LONGER AND WHEN I BOLTED IT UP IT PUSHED THE CRANK UP. WELL I DIDNT KNOW IT WOULD DO THAT. BUT AT THE TIME WE DIDNT KNOW IT PUSHED THE CRANK UP BUT I KNEW SOMETHING WASNT RIGHT SO I TOOK IT OFF WITHOUT RUNNING IT . MY MECHANIC DID SOME MACHIN WORK ON THE SHAFT AND SHORTENED IT TO WEAR IT FIT GOOD AND SHIFTED PERFECT, BUT WHEN I RAN IT (NOT KNOWING YET THE CRANK HAS BEEN PUSHEDUP) IT STARTED MAKING A METAL RUBBING SOUND AND IT WOULD DIE. IT WOULD CRANK BACK UP BUT IT WOULD DIE AND I KNEW IT WAS IN BAD SHAPE. WELL I TOOK IT BACK TO THE GUY AND HE TOLD ME THE CRANK WAS WARPED AND THE BEARING SURFACE WAS DAMAGED AND IT WOULD NEED REBUILDNG IF ABLE OR A NEW POWERHEAD. I JUST LOOKED ON THIS WEBSITE FOR A REBUILT POWERHEAD AND THE CHEAPEST PRICE I FOUND WAS 3200. AND I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE GUY THAT HAS MY BOAT AND MOTOR AND HE SAID IF I CAN GO AHEAD AND GET THE JOHNSON IT WOULD PROBABLY BE BETTER CUZ I WOULDNT BE SPENDING A WHOLE LOT MORE MONEY AND IWOULD BE GETTING A 4 YEAR NEWER MOTOR.

THANK YOU GUYS ALOT

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

Before you give up on her lets try something.

What happened was they gave you a lower with a upper drive shaft for a 90 degree motor. Its about 3/8" longer and that surface right below the groove may be slightly larger in diameter and will rub on the crank. We can get around all this.

Get the boat home and with the lower off hook your hose to the water tube and start it. If its OK then all we have to do is address the interference issue. No problem.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

I dont think hes trying to screw you its just he hasnt run into this before. There are slight differences in upper driveshaft heights that can be delt with easily if you know what to look at.

Before you spend a bunch of money lets look at what you have. With the lower unit off, hook a water hose to the copper tube so the powerhead gets water. Turn on the water and start the motor. It may idle higher than normal but thats because you REALLY dont have any back pressure now.

If the motor still wants to bind up then something is definately wrong in the powerhead. Nothing lost!

If the motor is OK then the driveshaft was just binding in/on the end of the crank. Everything gained!

Another way is to loosen the bolts and drop the lower a bit. Turn the flywheel by hand (I know its a pain to remove that cover) and slowly tighten up 2 of the lower unit bolts. If the powerhead starts to bind, then the d/s collar is hitting the crank.

Either way it doesnt cost anything and may save you a bunch!

Good luck!

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

ok. i dont know if i mentioned it in the first post i made, but my mechanic shortened the shaft before i ran it . he cut it to the correct length. it pushed the rank up when i bolted it up before we shortened it but at the time we did not know it pushed it up.

Re: FASTSTRIKE???????

OK, its at the correct length but what about the collar below the groove? Did you reduce the OD on that too?
