VRO Rebuild - Maintenance or Repair?

I've been doing some reading of old posts on VRO and am wondering if a VRO pump should be periodically rebuilt as a matter of routine maintenance, or whether this is only necessary in the event of the pump failing and needing repair.

I run a '86 Evinrude 140 with VRO. The VRO has never given me the slightest problem, but as far as I know, it has never been rebuilt. How long do these things last? Should I rebuild the VRO now or can I reasonably expect to get another 10 years out of the existing one?

Cheers.

If it aint broke - don't fix it, your only asking for trouble.

Can't have a guarntee that every time you go out on the water, something won't break.

What if you replace/rebuild the VRO, and next time out, you throw a rod, coincidence, or was it an oil metering issue????

If it ain't broke....

agreed!! if its not broke....... but just one thing VRO oiling is very reliable. if it gives out two things could happen. the gas pump side could give out, or the oil side. we have had a few come to the marina over the years that were miss diagnosed by other marinas, the motors had one or two pistons burned, the other marinas said the VRO gave out. if the VRO gives out on the oil side, you lose lubracation, all pistons, or most seise up, not burn. VRO is excellent. it got its bad name from miss diagnosed mec. that hated them
