Does the flywheel have a certain way that it goes on? the flywheel on my motor will not go down far enough for the starter gear to catch it and turn the motor over.

Who removed the flyweel? Did it ever fit that engine? If it does you have to line up the flywheel key at the crankshaft and the slot inside the flywheel.

I think you need a manual. That will help a lot.

Hmm, another Bear. I checked your profile. It doesn't say where you live? Maybe we are related.

Hello.
I know this sounds stupid, but are you sure the starter sprocket pops up as high as it should??
A few years ago I replaced a burned out 1957 starter with a 1998 build one.It all looked the same, but it only started working well when I replaced this new one with another 1957 one.
How many bjorns are there in Stockholm?

Hi Rolmops!
How many bjorns are there in Stockholm?
There is only one. :D We just have a minor problem with stray copycats. ;)
A good one on the starter. We don't know if Bear_01 bought the whole engine in running order or a in a couple of boxes.
What is the old saying? It is with flywheels and starters as with phonenumbers - almost right will not do.

the engine was running when i bought it. then the coils went bad on it and i replaced them and now the starter won't catch the flywheel....what would cause the starter not to come up???....i live in South Carolina :D

Hi Bear_01
So, if the flywheel is mounted correctly and everything looks good I can think of two things:
-use a fresh battery, perhaps the starter isn't spinning fast enough
-lube the armature shaft above the starter drive gear

Use thin oil, like WD-40.

I'm still concered about the flywheel ("will not go down far enough "). Can you remove it again just to be sure the flywheel key is where it is supposed to be? Can you turn the flywheel by hand or by the rope starter?
Analyzing Starting Motor Failure

I think I know your problem.

The flywheel is hitting on the coils, and will cause serious damage to the coils and it's magnet unless the coils are properly aligned.

J/E dealers still sell a locator ring for aligning the coils. I bought one about two years ago. It's very difficult to get this right without that tool.

Hi Bear01
I agree with Lark. When you replaced the coils, something did not get put back together properly. When you reinstalled the stator plate did you spread the rub blocks on the points, so the cam would seat properly on the crankshaft? Did you install the cam right side up? As lark stated the locating ring tool is the way to go. I wish I had one. I use a small stright edge to line up the mag. coils. This method is slower and allows for a mistake to be made.
