Second hand motor had not been run for 4 months.
Would not start until primed red lever on starboard of block. Ran in tank ok. Put it in the water and had to prime red lever again. Ran well for 15 minutes and died. Found brown wire loose top of block and it started and got 1000 yard home ran fine, thought that it was solved. Same thing happened today. After 10 minutes it started ran for 4 minutes died again. Have put it back in the tank at home. It starts if I prime red lever fast idles then dies. Thermostat did not seam to move when dipped in boiling water but seamed to be open. I removed it completely with no difference. Appreciate ideas please

Check and make sure that the vent in the gas tank is open. also after it dies open the cap of the tank and see if you hear air being sucked in. After that I would check the gas line, and then take a look at the carbs. one other thing to try is to pump the primer in the gas line and see if it starts to take off when you do this.

Carbs probably need a rebuild/cleaning after sitting for 4 months. Things tend to gum up after that long. Is the engine getting hot at all? What year are we talking about?

Thanks for the replys it is a 1990 model built in Australia. A E60TLESM. I checked vent. and unlikely to be Carb as it runs fine 4000rpm under load, until it dies as if the key is turned off and fires first time when it decides to go. Which makes me think the electrics are protecting the engine. But what?

Forbsea,
I was asking if the engine ever got hot, as you metioned you removed the T-Stat and it appeared stuck in the open position. A cold running endine will run bad. Also, where did the loose wire connect to? If it was light brown or tan, it could be to the temp sensor which alerts you of an overheat condition. Just a guess. Will it run higher than 4000 RPM's? Are you sure it's not overheating? Water in the fuel? Bad primer bulb or fuel line/connectors? Does the bulb stay firm and when it dies, is it collapsed? Does your electric primer not work with the key switch? Also, is the VRO still hooked up or do you mix your own oil with the gas?

rickdb1boat
Thanks. The engine does not seem to run hot. The engine runs smooth when running. The loose wire was tan and conection was at the top of the block and the wire ran out of site below the modules I suspected a temp sensor. But has not made difference. It runs to 5300 at full throttle no problem with good accelleration. I have two tanks one is brand new and both have new fuel. Bulb stays firm and does not colapse (vent open). Primer switch working and VRO hooked up.
