Re: 94 evinrude 28 hp spl

Falthead....the SPL's were (are) great running engines. They are just a notch down from popular HP's ie..your 28 is just a 30hp with a different gear case. The 48's are the same but don't get VRO's and fancy stuff like that. The only trouble with the 28's as I recall was that on the originals and I can't remember the year, there was a problem with the way the "armature" plate under the flywheel was fastened down. Some came lose and distroyed the fly wheel and ignition compnents under the wheel. It had to do as I recall with the fasteners used. I had one come through my shop once. Can't remember when that was either. (gosh its tuff to get old) Unless one of the other guys in the forum know right off the top of there heads which year it was, I will look it up in my literature tomorrow when I get back to the shop and let ya' know.

Jim

Hi Flathead.....

My service bullitens indicates that for part of the 1993 model year the ignition pilot ring was held in place by studs and nuts. The nuts had a tendency to work lose hence the whole shebang under the flywheel would come lose. The retrofit used screws in place of the studs and nuts. So next time yer under the flywheel, take a look. You should see four (4) screws holding the pilot ring in place.

Jim
