2 old outboards cant I.D.

I have one old Johnson I beleive to be a 40 Horse. Says model#RDSL-22 and serial#2073525 Also have old mercury 4cylinder been painted, but think it says Mercury 50 under paint. Also under cover stamped on side of motor says Thunderbolt, and ink stamped final inspection 1064 if that means anything. Any help I.D.ing these motors would be greatly appreciated

The 40 hp Johnson is a 1960 model.Need different numbers to id the Merc.

Check for a tag on transom bracket or upper area of engine block for a welsh plug that looks similar to a freeze plug.

Serial #tag is gone. Found a # on block 902-1389 Is this what I'm lookin for. Thanks guys

Also, the 1960 Johnson serial #RDSL-22 I have came with a nearly identical mate serial#rdsl-22d.What is the significance of this. The only differance in the 2 motors is the covers look like they may be different years. Dont appear to be counter rotating motors. By the way the 22D is froze and partially dimantelled.Other on Is complete and turns and fires. striippin down fuel system first. Been sittin for many years

And identical I belive. <br />1960 40 hp electric start <br />1960 40 hp manual start <br /><br />To soon to say anything about the spark plugs yet. I dont beleive the plugs in it are correct. They are NGK plugs, #BU8H but the tip of plug is touching the piston head, leaving mak on piston head that is visible when looking in to spark plug hole. No damage or cracks or anything. but not gonna turn over till I make sure I have right plugs. Anywhere to find pics of old mercs

You guys will have to bear with me. Kids just got these darned computers for christmas, and been awhile since I been surfin the net.Can send pics, but gotta figure out how first. lol Buddy o mine had old service manual for the Johnson so all should be well with that one. The Mercs, well the Merc. The cover has chrome covered handl and chrome stripe aroun lower portion.Very heavy. Been repainted black, but appears to have been black under that. Leanin towards 73 cause of the #s on the block.
