For those who have been helping me.. As you know I have two identical 1968 65hp Evinrudes. I only need one for my boat. So today I tested them both with the compression gauge.

Motor 1
cyl 1 -- 120psi
cyl 2 -- 118psi
cyl 3 -- 120psi
cyl 4 -- 118psi

Motor 2
cyl 1 -- 90psi
cyl 2 -- 100psi
cyl 3 -- 100psi
cyl 4 -- 30psi

So know I know that Motor 1 has good compression, so what do I do now? Is this the one I start to rewire? Or should I check some other things first? The wires are shot on both motors, but both starters fired right over of course I sprayed wd40 in the cylinders and turned by hand first.

Where do I go now????

Thanks

Hi, Lyman man.

Yup. You have it figured out. Use engine 2 for parts.

I am with JB on this one, put the money into motor #1 and use the other for parts.

Re: Update on Motors

Yep, you got a real good motor and I bet it gets a lot better with some running. Idea, try to find the electronics out of a 72 or later motor to replace every thing under the flywheel to do with the electronics. One of these guys with a better memory than me can point you in the right direction. You probably need to get the flywheel, stator, and module and a few odds and ends. That dist cap on the older model is hard to get, trouble prone, and if you go with the newer system is not required. Also the old amplifier is so very old the caps are probably dried up inside. Just an Idea.

Re: Update on Motors

A lot of those motors are junk now as the powerheads have gone on to meet their makers. I had a tough time with one a couple of years ago (like yours) and said then if I had it to do over again I would do an update. Blocks are all the same so with a good parts motor you may get everything you need for an update. Do you have a marine salvage yard near? Look around you may get lucky. You just need a blown head. The change took place on some models, the 50 I think was first and then expanded to others the next year. Look for a 70s Johnson or Evinrude with an ES in the numbers that did away with the distribitor and amplifier. Ohters still in the business here will advise.

Ron,
I don't know, sounds like it's a little over my head. I am new at this botor motor thing, I have manuals so I'll be fine with instructions.
Do you not think between the two motors Ill be able to get one going? What do I need to do to see if it will start. If it starts thats half the battle(or not)? I am willing to try anything as long as Ill be ready for spring. Hell the weather this week would be perfect to be out on the water.

Re: Update on Motors

Yes, by all means spin it over and see if it makes a spark. Take out the plugs and see what happens using the starter motor. A little dry action, a little, won't kill the impeller. That distributor being under the flywheel is tough to trouble shoot. If you have spark youre off to the races on your project, if not, off with the "head" I mean flywheel. good luck

Hi Lyman Man

This is your choice. On the one side - replacing the wires and trying a little with the components you got will cons you next to nothing but a little time and fun.If you get it fired up, you only needs to get it charging. It is however true that the later ignition types are even more reliable and easyer to work on, and they will bolt right on. You know you have a good powerhead, and maybee you will get a complete set with wires at a fair price at a scrapyard.

Re: Update on Motors

so let me see if I have this right, keep my powerhead, replace everything above it with newer stuuf. I guess switch it over to power packs an stuff? Am I following you correctly? And this 70's stuff will line up on the same holes?

-Leon

Re: Update on Motors

would parts from a 1975 115hp Johnson model #115ESL74B work. Someone local is selling it, but it runs. Just too heavy for my boat. My motor again is 1968 65hp Evinrude

Re: Update on Motors

i think in short what they are telling you is to use what ever you need off the 2nd motor to get the #1 running, example- #1 motor has bad power pack but #2 motors is good, swap it to #1 and so on. hope that helps. as i swap parts i would losely put old parts back on #2 motor to keep thing together.
