I replaced the vernatherm on a 73 135hp Johnson V4. Actually turned out to be an easy job, the old one was frozen, and the cyl temps have gone from room temp to almost but not too hot to keep your fingers on. Is this a good field test of proper thermostat function? How hot should the cylinder heads be typically on top of a cylinder by feel? Do people still test with the crayons?

SCO,

The heads will be at least 150 to 160 degrees. That sounds about right.

You can buy a "melt strip" from your dealer to verify temp.
