i have an 18 horse evinrude fastwin, don't know year, but here is serial number(i think, the last three numbers are scratched and hard to read)-18602C E18061- mix ratio is 50:1 right. I have a problem starting it. every now and then if i diconnect the fuel line it pretty much starts right up, after it starts and i reconnect fuel line it usually runs, but acts as though it is going to die. also when under full throttle, after a minute or so it boggs down then goes then boggs.....etc.

Hi J Headrick
You have a 1966 Model. Sounds like the float needle in the carb is sticking open and causing a flooding condition. You need to remove and rebuild the carb or at least remove and clean it out with carb cleaner and compressed air.

Try pumping the fuel bulb when it acts up. If it gets better rebuild the fuel pump.

Also, check your plugs and see what condition they're in. Are they wet or dry when this occurs? That will tell if it's starved for fuel.

Hello Neighbor,

I am also in AZ.

Anyway, good suggestions given so far. One tip, DO NOT spray carb. cleaner in the engine through the carb. It's OK to use as a solvent/cleaner while rebuilding the carb.

Once you know the fuel system is OK, you may also have ignition concerns-particularly with coils.

i cleaned the carb about a week ago. it wasn't very dirty, in fact, it looked new. i just realized that the other day when i took it out, i didn't open up the vent cap on the fuel tank. could that have something to do with it. how do you check the coils. by the way, spark plugs were damp...not soaked...not dry

Sounds symptomatic of a stuck float. If the float is stuck down, needle will not shut off flow of fuel into carb.

Likely that the motor is flooding.
Did you replace the float in the carb when you cleaned it?

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

J Headrick
That vent being closed would definitly cause the problem you described. Try it out again and see how it goes.

If the problems occur after plugging in fuel line but runs o.k. after you remove it I would check the fuel system out from the tank to the motor. You add that one component and the problem starts that component may be the problem. Just my 2 cents worth.

Taz

I have a 1957 evinrude fastwin and was wondering when you get it running if you could post how fast it can go. Mine runs great and can go 26 miles per hour with the wind. I had a spring break once that kept the choke flap closed... it would not start until I replaced the spring.

Hi Headrick
When you remove your carb, check for proper float leavel and funtion. then check to see if the little gasket on the main nossle is in good shape.

Re: 18 horse evinrude fastwin plug choice

i did the carb rebuild, and the thing started right up. ran it a little, then killed it. tried to start it up again, and it wouldn't start. i then got to messing with the auto choke and not letting it close. when i kept it open, it would start right up on first try. when i let it close, it won't start. i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how i can remedy this situation. thanks

Headrick
Your motor may be fitted with an eletric choke. There is nothing automatic about it. It both actuates manualy or electricly. I believe your missing a spring that holds the choke open. At least you found the problem. Good going. Try a spring from a ball point pen.

J...... Initially the engine called for J4J Champion s/plugs, set at .030. However, since the engine does have a few years on it the alternative spark plug is Champion J6C, still set at .030 .

Hi Headrick
Champion J6c gaped @.30. Try not to use another brand if you don't have to. You know years ago I didn't care much about spark plugs. One brand was as good as another I thought. Over time I have come to change my mind. If the manufacturer calls for a certain type and brand that's what I use. As far as these OMC outboards go the Champion is far superior.
