johnson 50 vro spares

are the parts from a 1984 johnson 50 vro the same as 1988 model? i have a 1988 in mint condition and i have the chance to buy a 1984 model that is also mint apart from a broken piston ring. i would like to buy it as a source of spares just in case. grateful for any help, thanks.

Tazzy...don't think 50hp Johnny's got VRO till 1985. Got a model number you can post?

ok guys i got the model number: BJ5obelco<br />and the serial number: G7045333 and i can confirm that it is an '85 model not an '84.

Hi Tazzy...the model number confirms 1985. Don't know if I would myself would buy it for spare parts. The lower unit would probably fit. Don't know right off hand about the gear ratio's being the same or not. I definetly would not use the VRO pump off the 85' on the 88'. Let me check the differences in the morning when I get to the shop and I'll post ya' what I find.

Good Morning Tazzy...did some checking and the two are pretty much the same engine. Lower units would swap out easy. Electronics are much the same. But again I would warn against using the VRO of the 85' and using it on the 88'. The 85' sounds like it would be a good "tear me down and learn" engine. Good Luck
