Hello, I have just bought a used tracker boat w/ a 1990 70 hp evinrude motor which I tried out and everthing seemed fine w/ the water flow ( I.E. the pee hole squirted water ok) But I put a set of ears on it to crank it out of water and noted that water seemed to be coming out somewhere behind the lower motor mount cover plates on the lower unit. Is this normal as I didnt remember seeing water at these areas when the man I bought it from ran it the same way in his yard before I bought it. Is it possible a seal is gone and it needs a water pump. Ive never changed one is it difficult? Please help thanks, Joe

Re: water pump

tvman,Take a close look at where water seems to be coming from behind the mount plates. There are two 1/4 " holes near front of lower exhaust housing just behind the plates that serve as a cavity overflow. If it is coming from these holes ,no worries. These holes are only slightly visible from a front view with a small mirror. If its not in outside daylight a flashlight and mirror are helpful.

Re: water pump

Thanks OB, that was a good answer that makes me feel better. Youre probably right, I will look
again, I removed one of the plates but didnt see any better. I just didnt remember seeing water come out in this area when I was buying it. I noticed that there was not alot of water coming out of exhaust when I ran it, and not having a manual I dont know all the areas. I am ordering a new water pressure gauge today as the old one was broken and a manual ( any ideas who has best manuals for the money ) thanks so much for the speedy reply. I was worried!

Re: water pump

Are you sure the water pressure guage is broken? Could it be the pressure tube is pinched or, cracked, or broken? Or plugged with a piece of dirt? Worth checking out.

Re: water pump

Hello again, just a follow up question on the 70 hp
1990 model evinrude, where is the warning horn usualy mounted and what does it look like? Also I installed a new water pressure gauge and am corncerned about water freezing it and causing damage, should I be?

Re: water pump

tvman,

If you are worried about freezing, make sure the engine is stored in the upright position-not tilted.

The exhaust relief ports (two holes) are located at the top of the leg just below the lower cowl pan. They may or may not have water coming out while running. Alot depends on the pressure your hose is capable of giving and whether or not the thermostat is open.

If water is running out of the lower cowl pan above those holes, you have a problem. It could be a faulty head gasket or head water passage gasket.

Re: water pump

tvman,The warning horn is located inside the throttle controls. If you are concerned about freezing of guage or line leading to guage you can disconnect and drain during freezing weather. Here's a pic of a side mount 1990 control box .#4 is the warning horn.

Controls

tvman,

Sorry, I forgot about your question on the warning horn. If you want to check it, do this:

1. Locate a tan wire on the head of the engine. It goes into the head at the sensor. It is located toward the top.

2. Unplug it. With the key on, ground the wire (harness end) to the engine block. The horn should sound.

Re: water pump

Hello, thanks for the replys, I will take the hose off the gauge untill cold is over, but I want to ask djohns about his reply on the holes below the cowl, Im not sure where you are refering to, read the reply from ob dated feb 16 th on my question about water behind the m/m plates just above the lower unit. I later saw the water coming out the 2 holes he refered to. after I installed the new w/pressure gauge I had about 1o lbs. at idle and a good flow at tattle tale.
