Im having continued problems with a wet plug, rough run, popping/puffing/stalling when cold. instant starts, and instant restarts after stall. runs rough or surgey even when warm and misses at higher rpm. Engine sat for many years. I replaced the plugs and fuel pump as it was the upper hole that was getting wet. And I have gone rich and lean. I have not ran this engine behind a boat yet although I was advised to put it in the water and run it hard. Any input? Could I be having a head gasket or possibly reed problem? Please help I really want to go play.
Dan

Hi Alex
Did you give this motor a compression test as Hooty suggested? If so were the #s good? Do you have good spark to both holes? Did you clean the carb? You state that your top plug is wet. This indecates a problem with that cylender. The problem could be lack of compression due to stuck rings, head gasket, etc. Or maybe the ignition is not firing that plug, maybe a bad plug. When you say wet, what do you mean? Wet with what? oily, dirty, black gooo. Or is it wet from water, clean, maybe a little rusty? I think if this problem was fuel related you would have a problem with both cylenders. It's quite possible that when the previous owner doused it down with oil and let the motor set up so long that the ring got gooey and are stuck.

Re: 77 evinrude 35

hey alcan. Compression was checked and reported to me as 110 and 115 cold. The plug is wet with fuel, but is clean, is firing and has new plugs. there is no indication of water on the old or new plugs. I had considered the possibility of a sticking ring which i figured could cause an intermittent problem, but I dont know how to degum a 2 stroke. I did not clean the carb. I was going to put it in the water this morning and and work it a little to see what happens. I figure if it is a gummy storage problem, getting the rpm,s up under load and getting it good and warm will help. if its a head gasket, it will get worse and the symptoms will be more defined. I will be taking a little auxillary with me just in case. I did have one other thought on this, the mix was a little more like 40:1, and the fuel was about 9 months old. think this could cause the problem?

Hi Alex
Old fuel is never good. How ever the 40:1 mix should have no real negitive affect. the compression is good, rules out stuck rings and head gasket. Good spark, rules out ingition. That leaves you with a fuel problem. Possible dirty carb, carb out of adsjustment, intake leaks either air or fuel. Could be nasty fuel tank. Check venting and the connectors. The connectors can suck air.

well, I decided to to run the thing and see what happend. I put 6 gallons of fresh fuel at 50:1, strong current, and a need for speed with a large population of large stripers at hand. Dropped her in the water and hit the throttle. the engine complained for about a minute and then was submisive. we stopped once to refuel and she purred like a kitten. I guess this old engine just had some cob webbs and we blew them out. I paid $100 for this engine, plus $50 for a fuel and water pumps. I ran her for 6+ hours without a cough, And I could not be more pleased. thanks for all of your input over the last couple of weeks.
Dan
