O-ring in Water Pump Kit

Hello all. I have just replaced my water pump in my 1990 60hp Johnson. I had bought a kit that came with all the pump part except the housing now at the end of the day I have a left over o-ring. I was very particular when I dismantled the pump from the start to make sure I knew where everything went to and I have no o-ring from the original pump anywhere. Does anyone have a clue to where this things goes?

May be in the groove in top of the drive shaft.

Or under the impellor. You might not have noticed that there was one when you disasembled the pump and left the old one in place.

OK...there is no groove on top og the drive shaft. As for the old impeller I do not see an o-ring but there is a seat built into it that the o-ring does fit into nicely.

On OMC's theres usually an o-ring that goes in the upper pump housing where the shaft comes through. Acts as a seal for the driveshaft.

most w/p kits fit many years and types of engines,so there maybe extra parts left over. If you don't have a groove at the top of the drive shaft don't worry about it.

Re: O-ring in Water Pump Kit

The OEM kits use to come with instruction and parts breakdown, you could tell where the o-ring went by looking at the parts breaksdown. Did you get the kit with instructions to relocate the tattle tale nipple and hose to top of block, and new thermostat cover with new pressure relief spring. The temp sensor also should have a tan/blue stripe lead about 7 inches long.

There is 1 o-ring between the plastic housing and the stainless steel cup. 1 o-ring on bottom side of impeller, between the impeller and the wear plate. The waterpump kits have been changed a few times without a part number change. Part number of pump with housing should be 432955, may have 6 bladed inpeller.

Re: O-ring in Water Pump Kit

Well I am at a loss. The kit number is 432956 which does not come with the coolant system overhaul. But I have one o-ring that has got the best of me. I'm using the Clymer manual and it's description of the water pump remove/install is as vague as it can be. Does anyone have a manual that covers a 1990 60hp Johnson that might be able to shed some light on my problem. For all I know it may not even go with this type of motor and I'm scratchin my head for nothing.

Post your model # so we can be sure of what pump style you have(they used a three blade impeller instead of 6 and had big problems ) . Any updates may have been done already .

Ok model number VJ60TLESM. I bought the boat from the original owner and he had nevered changed the water pump. So the original equipment I still have. The original impeller is a 6 blade and the original housing is model number 391049.

Re: O-ring in Water Pump Kit

Part number 432956 has been replaced by 432955 which works on up to 2000 models engines. The OEM manual, 1990/2000 parts book does not show all of the parts that come in this kit. You need instructions that came in the kit. The 432955 kit has a 6 bladed impeller. The placement of the o-rings depends on the kit you are using or may not be used on your engine. The 1990 service manual with old style pump does not show any o-rings.

Re: O-ring in Water Pump Kit

Thank-you Clanton. I also made one mistake, I read the box the kit came in and it is kit 18-3387 and underneath it says it REPLACES OMC 432956. But unfortunatly no instruction in my kit.

Chickenship,Listen to clanton. He's dead on.Those waterpump kits were changed and require a thermostat change as well. The sierra kit you have does not conform to the update.

Re: O-ring in Water Pump Kit

The pump I recently replaced on my Evinrude had two O rings a small one at the top of the drive shaft and a large one that sat over the drive shaft on top of the pump and was sandwiched there when the casings were put back together,
perhaps it is this .
