My Johnson 110 outboard loses spark randomly. I can spend a couple minutes interment cranking with a plug out and have no spark.
It sparks for a few seconds then goes dead again. It ran today for a minute and just quit then no more spark at all.
What should I be looking for that's broken?

Any info would be appriciated

Shark.... Remove the black/yellow wire from the back of the ignition switch, then try again. If that cures your problem, replace the ignition switch.

Note that with that wire removed, you will not be able to kill the engine by turning the key off.

This may not be the cause of your problem but it's a starting point. Let us know what you find.

Hi shark.
Sounds like it may be your power coil or possibly a timer base. I would lean towards the power coil though. If you have a peak reading volt meter, check the out put to each power pack from the power coil. Should read well over 100volts. (don't have a book in front of me to give you exact voltage) Your lack of spark and I'm assuming you have none at all spark plugs, says that it's something common to them. Power coil is the common thing. Let us know what ya' find.

Shark.. I would pull apart all the amphenol connectors dealing with the ignition system and make sure all the pins and sockets are pushed into the connector all the way.

After that I would have someone roll the motor while you monitor the spark and move all the wires around with a pair of plastic pliers to see if you can get the spark to quit or activate. Make sure to give the starter a cool down period every 5 to 10 seconds. Pay peticular attention to the main red instrument harness plug. I've had alot of them with failed connections inside the molded connector.

I'm not sure how you bypassed the harness. What I normally do is unplug the main red harness plug and manually activate the starter soleniod. If the problem is anywhere in the boat harness or box you will get good spark by doing this. If you still have no spark disconnect the black/yellow wire coming from the power pack. If you get spark, that kill wire is shorting to ground somewhere under the hood.

Good Luck....

OutboardJim
I'll replace the powercoil and let ya know. I'm so sick of this I'm now replacing parts. It's going on 3 months of troubleshooting this engine. Fishing season is comming quick!

"Your lack of spark and I'm assuming you have none at all spark plugs"
Correct. All 4 either fire or not.

Dragonslayer

"I'm not sure how you bypassed the harness. What I normally do is unplug the main red harness plug and manually activate the starter soleniod."

Exactly how I did it. All connectors are pushed in and connected. I'll check out the black/yellow disconnect on the powerpack.

Thanks guys. I've been pretty much stuck wondering what to check on next. I wish my manual had a checklist of everthing to check in order... Jason

Here's my boat
http://members.cox.net/jhaya

Hey Shark listen, go get your self an OEM service manual. If you have a generic, that's good for general stuff, but to get into trouble shooting you need a OEM manual. They got a who chapter on troubleshooting the ignition system. I'd bet my next 10lb. Bass that you wouldn't be having this problem if ya' had a OEM manual. Keep us posted and Good Luck. :D :D
