I have a 1984 Johnson 50hp with OMC controls. I have some questions about the controls: At the bottom of my control unit there is a 3 prong connection socket - what is this for? Also, there is a black knob that looks like a miniature oven knob above this harness - What does it do? Thanks a bunch for the help.

Hi jpbramlett

The little Amphenol connector is a tach harness for hookin up a thachometer. The little knob is for adjusting throttle tension, to make the throttle stay in the position you leave it in.

JP..... That black knob would be a tension control whereas you can adjust the tightness of the throttle/shift lever to keep it from moving, should it have a tendency to move due to viberation etc.

The electrical plug with a three (3) prong connectiuon is usually usued for the tachometer which has a corresponding plug (just plug it in).

The connections are (left to right in a clockwise motion) Power 12v (purple wire), Tach pulse lead (gray wire), Ground (black wire).

The connection cal also be used of course for any 12 volt power take off, ground connection, etc. Just DO NOT connect any lead to the center "GRAY" lead other than the proper tachometer gray lead as that would damage the charging circuit.

Thank you both for the help. Joe, where are you from in central Florida? I grew up in Crystal River.

Isn't crystal river where a snorkeler was eaten by a big gater some 15 years ago?

SCO...yeah it is. That kid, his name is Mike, was two years behind me in school. He was in the canal behind his house is about 4ft water and the gator grabbed him by his head. The mask ended up protecting his face but the back of his head got tore up pretty good. His mother saw him struggling and was able to grab his arm - a tug of war took place and the gator let go of him. On his way up the bank the gator grabbed him by the ankle and crushed it. He still walks with a limp today...he's lucky to be alive though. Anyways, that's the gator strory.

That's interesting, but different than what I recall. This was a full grown man that was snorkeling in some sort if snorkel area for a group, and he wandered away and was literally eaten. I recall they found his remains inside the gator. I lived in Florida back then between Jupiter and Stuart. I saw a big gator there one time. An amazing primeaval creature.

I don't recall that one SCO, but I'm sure it happened. Especially if they were around the Rainbow River. That place is a gator haven.
