1994 15hp Evinrude won't idle.

I just found this board and am amazed at the wealth of info located here. You guys seem to really know your stuff and are willing to share freely, what a great place.

I tried searching the board for my problem but haven't seen it listed so I thought I'd ask and see if there might be a suggestion.

The motor is a 94 15hp Evinrude Model # E15REOD. I use it year round, it never sits idle more than a few weeks. I've performed general maintainance on it every year and have never had any trouble at all until now.

The motor will not idle, it runs fine by just giving it just a little gas. This problem is the same in gear while moving slowly or out of gear. If I don't touch the throttle at all it will idle down for a few seconds then it seems to have a slight miss that is the begining of the problem. As soon as it misses the motor seems to be starved for fuel and dies. I have figured out that if I give it half choke as soon as I hear the miss then push the choke back in the motor will stay running.

Today I replaced the plugs and sprayed a can of carb cleaner through the motor. The problem is still there. Like I said earlier, if I give the motor any gas at all it runs perfect at all RPMs.

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Rob

Rob VA,

First off, DO NOT use carb. cleaner in a 2-stroke engine such as yours. It washes all of the lubricating oil of off the internal parts. Not good. If anything, put some 50:1 premix in a spray bottle and use that for testing.

Anyway, you have classic carburetor problems. It's time for a rebuild of the carb.

I would suggest you start with a manual (availble on this iboats site) or go to the library.

I also suggest using OEM parts.

Thanks for the reply.

I sure hope I didn't damage anything by running the carb cleaner through the motor. On the bright side I never sprayed it into the motor while it was running, I merely used it as a cleaner. I did run the motor for 5 minutes after doing this and everything seemed normal.

Is rebuilding the carb something a backyard mechanic such as myself can handle or should I try to save myself some headaches and turn the job over to a pro?

Rob Va
Before you assume it is a carburetor problem I would make some simple checks. First I would make sure have a good strong spark for both plugs, may be one cylinder not fireing at all. Second I would try adjusting Low speed idle. Third I would pull off the hose and see how long it will run at idle, this will tell you if fuel bowl on carb empty or full. If empty could be fuel screen plugged up or in line fuel filter.

If you do not have a good strong spark then do not rebuild the Carburetor but instead find problen with spark.

Rob VA,

I'm sure you're fine, as long as you didn't give a whole dose while it was running.

Yes, you can easily tackle the carb. rebuild. I do suggest a manual.

Re: 1994 15hp Evinrude won't idle

I've pretty much determined it's a carb problem after checking almost everything I could think of.

I just went to order a service manual from this website and have run into another small problem. The service manual breaks b/n 94 and 95 and I want to make sure I order the right one. On the inside of my motor cover there's a date stamped of June 24, 1994 however going by my model # of E15REOD the chart I found says my motor is a 95.
Which year is my motor? I noticed there are 2 manuals on this site for my motor, is one better than the other or are they both good?

Thanks again.... Rob

Re: 1994 15hp Evinrude won't idle

I have a question that has to deal with pretty much the same thing he is dealing with.

I had problems with the a coil & power pack on my 1979 Evinrude. I bought a new coil & power pack that gave me the spark I needed. I have since taken my boat out on the bay to crab. I fired it up let it warm up,ran rough at an idle .Soon as I open the motor up,it pick up the bow for about 10 seconds & then fell on its face, unless I pulled the choke wide open. It still did not have the power it seems like it should. I took it straight home took off the carb. & put a kit in it. I also cleaned the filter as well as got a complete new fuel system, gas can hoses the works.
I have since taken it out , fired right up, runs smooth takes off great until you open full throttle! It again wants to fall on its face UNLESS you pull the choke 1/4 of the way out now. My idle I notice as well was a little rough until I adjusted the mixture, now it is fine. My problem is opened wide open I still have to have the choke 1/4 way out . It seems like the power is not all the way there , It is BETTER but it will not get this little 13' Whaler to a plain.
Can someone HELP ???
Thanx
Craig

Welcome to iboats craig. You have come to the right place, but first you need to start your own new thread so that no one gets confused.

RobVA: before you go rebuilding, look on the top right (starboard) side of the black "plastic" plate atop your carb. There will be a screw with a spring. Unscrew(counterclockwise) the screw 1/2 turn and see if your problem disappears. If it doesn't, then it may be time for a rebuild. I've found that using STP Fuel Injector and Carburetor Cleaner proportionately in the fuel is just about like having a good carburetor guy with you! I used to do about $1000 a week in carb work until that stuff came out~

He had the problem in march 2003 grid, so I doubt he still has the problem ;) Just a hijacked thread from a search.

Hi, I had the same problem. I had to take off the carburator and pull off the bottom (six screws) and they are numbered in sequence 1,2,3,4,5,6 pull them off and on in sequence. Take the float and seat needle assembly off. You will find a little brass jet on the bottom of the main jet body that has to be cleaned. Take this brass jet out with a regular screwdriver clean it and reinstall. Also add a little SeaFoam (carb cleaner) in your fuel tank. 1 to 2 ounces per gallon. Don't forget to readjust your air mixture screw (the one with the spring on it) and the rich/lean adjustment that is on the tiller handle for best idle and performance. Hope this has been helpful.
