I have an old Evinrude Lark IV. The engine has been rebuilt and there are no serial or model numbers anywhere on the motor. I think its a 35 or 40 hp. I had taken it in to a marina to see why it wouldnt start and they said it was the ignition coils, points, and condensors (the parts under the flywheel) I couldnt afford to pay them for the work, and when I went to pick it up they left all the new parts in the boat! Now the problem that I am having is that I have figured out how to place them on top of the motor, but I have no idea where all the wires go. Does anyone have any tips on this? Thanks in advance. If im not making any sense I would be glad to take a picture and post it.

First, a manual would really help you out here. You might find one at your local library. If you want to buy one, I can tell you the small hp Seloc one will cover your motor, since it covers '56-'70, up to 40hp. You'll probably want to do a link&sync, etc, too and the manual will tell you how.
Each cylinder has an independant identical ignition, so you should have two of each part. First, the coils have a long (insulated eye) and a short (uninsulated eye?). The short one gets grounded to the engine through one of the coil hold down screws. The long one goes to the terminal on its point (the one it reaches). The condensor wire also connects to the point. Finally, the kill wire coming up from below the armature plate attaches to the point. There may be two kill wires, one for each circuit.
Points must be adjusted so they open precisely 0.020" when the cam on the crankshaft opens them fully. The coils must be aligned as squarely as possible to the bosses on the plate - the distance between the coil and magnet (gap) is critical. There is a "special tool", ie a ring, to do this but I don't think it's available anymore. All wiring *must* be tucked down as far as possible - there is hardly any clearance between the wiring and the flywheel. Rotate the flywheel after installation to make sure it doesn't catch on anything. Torque your flywheel nut to 760 in/lbs if it's from the 50's, or 1230 in/lbs if it's from the 60's.

A Lark IV is a 1962 40 hp model.

The "special tool" is called a ring locator. I bought one two years ago from a J/E dealer. Not cheap.

The Clymer's 1956-1972 Johnson/Evinrude Repair Manual is also an excellent book.

Mornin' Fishheads,

As per Paul Moir:
Just do one side at a time. Replace the new parts exactly where the old prts cam from. As to aligning the coils, there are machined faces on the stator. Align the edge of the coil laminations with the machined boss. Them turn flywheel to confirm no rubbibg. this should get you there.

you may have to remove the stator in order to route and mount the plug wires.

good advise was for you to get a manual.

a lot of the old johnyrudes were based on one design. the following link is for tuning an ol' 3hp Lightwin. this procedure will lend itself to yours. please note. the link is to page 1. look near the bottom of the page for lik to the next page.

http://www.maxrules.com/fixtuneitup.html

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

P.S. I love these ol' gals
