Re: 96 JOHNSON CARB.TROUBLE

Howdy cornpile, welcome to the forum.

Could you tell us why it would need an overhaul every year? Is because of dirt getting to the bowls or is it something else?

Hey OutboardJim
My trouble seems to be with the floats
sticking.Both open AND closed.
The bowls are always pretty clean.
recently the second carb has been hesitating
when I open it up.
Last year was the opposite, second carb getting
stuck wide open and It would not run under load.
Any tips on adjusting floats?

Re: 96 JOHNSON CARB.TROUBLE

Cornpile, are you using OEM parts? That is carb kits from Bombardier? The OEM kits have inlet needles tipped with Vitrom. This rubber is resistant against the formulated fuels we get today. The generic kits, from what I've seen. don't use Vitron. These tips can get "sticky" and cause problems. When setting the float, turn the carb upside down. Set the float just slightly high from level. Just a bit will do. I myself have a 85' 50hp johnny. It's been about four years since I've done carb work to it. Keep us posted. Just another thought. Are the throttle plates in time with each other? They should open at the same time. I'm assuming you have a manual, generic or OEM. Check out your sync and link and see what you find. It's an easy setting to perform. Keep us posted.

Oops! Try the factory kits this time. Also it tends to gum up or stick when it sits. Now theres a good excuse to get out more!

Good luck!

Might be a stupid question: Do you have down time with your outboard in fla.? Are ya stabilizing your fuel?
