The following is a press release from boating-industry.com today. It looks like there are going to be some real mad dealers out there. Many are still raging over the OMC bankruptcy:

Bombardier CEO Paul Tellier may recommend that the company's recreational division be sold when he presents the Bombardier's financial results for fiscal year 2003 and reveals his future plan for the company tomorrow at a news conference, according to reports from several Canadian newspapers. In addition, there have been indications that Bombardier Capital may be sold.

The recreational division includes Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines, personal watercraft, sport boats and snowmobiles. Bombardier Capital provides financing to marine dealers, among others.

The company, which also manufacturers airplanes and train cars, currently is in a state of financial crisis, with high levels of debt and its stock trading at eight-year lows, say some sources.

This may be interesting:

"Bombardier, Deere Announce Strategic Alliance for Product Development". The following link will take you to an article about this:

http://www2.cdn-news.com/scripts/ccn-release.pl?/2003/01/23/0123054n.html

Apparently John Deere and Bombardier Recreational Products are working together, starting with some ATV's. I wonder what a green and yellow outboard would look like on my boat :) ?

RCS

ODDD1,

John Deere used to make snowmobiles. When I was in my teens (1970's) they were considered very high quality sleds for the time. They stopped making them and these old sleds don't hold a candle to the new ones but the John Deeres were known for their comfort, power and durability. I listed the above link just for fun but I would not be disappointed at all if John Deere took over Ski-Doo, Johnson and Evinrude. The company I work for does much business with John Deere and I have seen first hand how they thoroughly test every one of their products to insure high quality and durability. They stand behind everything they make and plan on being around for many years to come.

Best regards,
RCS

As revolutionary as Evinrude proclaims their new E-Tec engines to be one might think that Bombardier would want to keep the company. Especially with all of the research and development costs.

A green and yellow motor would really clash with my marine blue carpeting, but I could replace the carpet.

Well, they are definitely selling the snowmobile division. No reference to the outboards, but I would imagine that they will be "on the block" shortly if not packaged with the snowmobiles. Sounds like Bombardier is going to concentrate on trains and airplanes.

http://www.webfin.com/en/news/news.html/?id=32624

Brew

Based on a press release I saw earlier today, it looks like the Bombardier family wants to retain control of the division, but split it off with the help of other investors. That would help the major corporation by slimming down to core business, and by bringing in some quick cash.

A separate company with only the rec products, with the Bombardier family having significant control might be a good thing all around.

I sad to see them go and hope some one buy them out. I really gave up on them making it when I saw no commitment to Build 4 cycle motors.

A sad day.

maybe it's eternal optomism but I'm holdin'-out hope.
Some of the JohnyRude's still in production, are based on the ol' tried & true designs. I'd hate to see these go away.

Klondike,

Me too! From what I've read, the "recreational" division of Bombi, is sort of the "crown jewel" of the whole group. While it is a small portion of the corporate portfolio, it is a very profitable one. The return on investment (ROI) is quite high.

This makes that division a prime spin off target to generate some much needed cash. Also, many members of the original Bombardier family (3rd generation) are involved in the recreation group.

It's just "too fat" of a prize for some smart corporation to ignore.

I'm not a big fan of Deere buying it, I think it is too far from their primary focus. However, how about Suzuki? That merger would instantly fix Suzuki's didstribution/dealer support issues.

Snapperbait-check out Rocketek Marine -they have a surface piercing drive coupled to an inboard. As for the Johnson/Evinrude controversy,I think the Bombardier family will step up and take the reins in what will be called the 'Heritage Division'

well to tell you the truth no one ever wants to hear a bad thing as you all know I am quite involved with them on the pro fishing side and I assure you that in the end this will be a good thing for them. 100% AS I was told only good things will come from this!
