i can't figure this one out???
after i had my lower unit replaced with a used one, my evinrude shift's REAL hard!(almost need two hands) i have kerhaufer controls in my baja.checked them and look good and free of binding. checked cable at the midsection linkage, looked ok. removed cable and by itself moved very easy. moved shift linkage on motor without cable and that moved easily also! as soon as the cable is hooked back to the shift arm, it returns to hard shifting! any ideas. could they have installed my lower unit wrong? there are no tension adjustments(that i can't find) my cable is black with red end's on it, it also has a barrel part close to the end with slots in it with a clip on the back slot. any ideas? thanks...james DHADLEY....any luck on the kingfin?

Re: hard shifting on my V8

James, we are looking at building one out of aluminum instead of glass. I'll keep you posted.

I'm not sure about your shift problem. If I understand correctly once you unhook the cable it shifts easily in and out of gear. Motor running or not? If thats the case I would suspect the problem is from the motor forward. If it shifts hard coming out of gear with the motor running, I would suspect the shift interrupter switch (or the adjustment of the cable / switch) or a high idle. Did it do this before the lower unit swap? Which gearcase did you replace it with? Are you sure you have Kiekafer controls or maybe the Morse MY controls?

Good luck!

well, it's all the time!
even if the motor is not running it's hard to shift. the shift cable moves freely when unhooked from the shift linkage on the motor.?????james

OK, the cable is good and free. I take it then the shift linkage hard to move by hand. Was the shift rod hard to get lined up with the hole in the adaptor plate?

Re: hard shifting on my V8

For some reason I've been getting a rash of these this month. What has probably happened is the cap on the top of the lower unit that the shift rod goes thru has corroded to the point that it has pinched the O ring and shaft is having a hard time sliding up and down. Remove the lower unit and see if the shift shaft can be moved up and down by hand. If not, you will need to unscrew the shaft (count the turns) remove the cap, O ring and clean the corrosion out of the groove.

Re: hard shifting on my V8

If it slides in and out of gear with one finger and your thumb and the cable is free enough you can move the handle via the cable from the back it should work fine. Why did you change gearcases? If the other one shifted fine and a day later the new one has a problem I would look at the unit. But if it shifts easy by hand it should shift easy via the control. What did CC Marine say? Surely they tested it. Did you buy it from them? Or just have them install it?

i changed lower units when the old one died on me. maybe it's just the way it's going to shift. they sold/changed it for me. after the install, it shifted harder then the previous lower unit...james

Re: hard shifting on my V8

took the hammer out yesterday.
what i found was the motor is extreamly hard to shift when it is running.the hardest is getting it out of gear(forward to netural). i'm going to drop the lower unit and see if the rod is corroded like Capt Ken said. will i need any new gaskets when reinstalling the lower unit?im also leaning twords the shift switch.are they somthing that will just work on day and die the next? also, yesterday the motor was havind a hard time staying in reverse while trimmed up almost all the way in shallow water. it sounded like it was in-between gears.at least this motor keeps me buisy!....james

Re: hard shifting on my V8

ok, here is an update...
started the motor and depressed the switch.rpm's droppped to about 500(from 1000 on land with muffs's) there are 4 parts to the switch: the 2 slider halv's, the switch, and the top round cam bolt attached to the shift linkage.. on the cam bolt there is a small hole that travels through the back. i went on the parts page for this motor and in the shift linkage it shows a cotter pin around that area. i see no cotter pin on mine. a'm i missing a part?hopefully somone has some insite.if not....she's off to the shop..OUCH!!!james :D
