Gents,I´m owning a 70 Evinrude which drives me nuts. Motor starts well, and makes rounds to maximum in water barrel but than bangs and stopps.
Seems that fire flames leaf exhaust.Exhaust smokes. Ingnition is tested and well, fuel oK.It stops so brutal that propeller pin is cracked after a while. It sounds as if piston got hidden down as it comes right up?!? Leaf plate and stop leaf looks little bit smokes at one edge? Any ideas where I can look at?
Where can I order parts for that "antique" motor for shipping to Germany?
Looking forward for any idea:)

Florian,

Those big twins do not like to be revved up in nuetral, if that's what you are doing. They will backfire on decelleration.

I believe you are describing your reed plates. If any of them are bent, you will need new ones.

Make sure your timing is correct and the key is not sheared on the flywheel.

Thanks djohns19, I do not change gear except in neutral. Motor stops after several hard bangs (hope that is not missdiscribing the effect - my English is just school trained). First idea was that ingnition is faulty but that´s checked an ok.
The carburator gas inlet is controlled by 2off leafs. One is beanded and I have just turned it 180° - same effect.Any idea where I can order spare parts?
Happy for any feedback!!!
Florian

djohns19 thanks for reply. Haven´t fully understood what You mean. "Lean" means not enough gas or low fat mixture? :)
At which egde would You look at the carburator?
Do You think needles (main or side) are worn? They look both quite good - to my understanding.
Thanks for support!!!
Florian

Lean = too much air not enough fuel

Turn the low speed screw counter clockwise 1/2 turn till it the motor warms enough to run without the additional enrichment.

Yepblaze thanks, but I´m doubtful whether that is the reason. It really sounds as if piston will be hidden downwards right at the moment it comes up (befor upper point of return?!? If it would be a 4 stroke I would guess belt for valve control is jumping - but it´s a 2 stroke - obviously. Irealy do not know where to look at.
Florian :(
