My motor has been been unused for 2 years. Testing the VRO alarm by shorting it to the engine block indicates it works but there is no beep when the ingnition is switched on. How do i tell if the pump is working? A mech said the pump is a double diaphragm pump so if it fails, both gas and oil would not get to the motor? What about gravity allowing gas in?

Hi kritzi,

I run 2 of exactly the same motors. There is no way gravity will feed the carbs unless your fuel tank is substantially higher than the carbs. Even then, I'm not entirely sure that the vro will allow free flow through it.

do yourself a favour though, clean out your oil tank, the pickup filter etc and refill with clean tcw 3 oil. Disconnent the oil supply hose at the VRO and pump the oil bulb untill oil comes out the hose. Reconnect and fasten the hoseclamp securely.
Measure the level of oil in the tank and run the motor on premixed fuel 50:1 untill you are sure the level of the oil is dropping. That way you know the oil supply to the vro is good.

kritzi,

Rude african is correct. You should service the system.

I believe some of the earlier VRO units did not have the "prove out" beep. You can replace the warning horn (inside control box) with a horn that does have the prove out feature.

Just to add; that mechanic is wrong. The oil side of the vro can fail without the fuel side failure.

As an option, you can disconnect the VRO and run premix in your gas tank. Eliminates the possibility of the pump failing.
