Lower end seal replacement

Hey Guys, I need some advice on how to replace the lower end seal on my 71 125 Johnson. I noticed some water in the gear oil last fall when I drained it and thought that since the prop is off getting touched up I might as well replace the seal while I'm there. It looks pretty straight forward but if anyone's done this and has some tips I'm all ears. Thanks

Tedinator,

I wouldn't codemn that propshaft seal so fast.

The most common areas for L/U leaks are the fill/drain plug gaskets/seals.

Re: Lower end seal replacement

Thats a good point, I'll replace them as well. Another thing is the pump impeller. I've only ever done one and that was on my 5 hp Honda. I'm hoping I'll be looking at basically the same job but on a bigger scale.
Another thing, a couple of times last season the motor would'nt come out of gear after about 15 minutes of steady running. I tried putting it in neutal and reverse but it stayed in forward. I took it slow for a while then it started working fine again. I hauled out, drained the L/U and put new lube in and that seemed to fix it. The lube had some water in it so that got me going on solving the water ingression problem.

By the way djohns, I checked out the pic's of your fine vessel. Sweet job!! I love it when people resurrect old stuff. Very rewarding for you I'm sure.

Ted you may be faced with something that JB Weld can't fix. You told us that you found water in the LU last fall but probably don't know how long it has been there. That plus shifting problems may indicate that you have more going on in the gear case than leaking seals.

I suspect the same thing but want to be sure before I tackle the job. Hopefully it won't be a major expense. Any more suggestions?
