I took my 1985 procraft 90 hp evinrude in to a local marine and had my vro disconnected by the owner , who is well thought of around here been in business a good number of yrs. well from reading here on the forum I had a perty good idea how but I felt more comfortable with a mechanic doing it, well after he was finished i went to pick up the boat and noticed that he had disconnected and plugged the oil line where it goes thru the SHROUD!right next to where the gas line is plugged in, and he capped the stem where the line had plugged into it. I was under the idea that it was taken off inside the shroud?
also I thought you had to disconnect some wires and brought that up to him and he said it wasn't necessary! well I am confused now, any ideas on this?

thnx
mark

He did the oil line right, but you need to disconnect the electrics to stop the alarms from going off. On the side of the pump is a rubber connector that needs to be disconnected and taped up. Also, remove the wires from the oil tank where they connect to the engine. Remove the tank, wires and oil line from the boat. Disconnect the bullet connector and Ground out the tan wire from the temp. senser(Back of powerhead) with the ignition in the ON position to verify the overheat warning horn works. He should have done all that.

It really doesn't matter where the line is cut and capped except for astetics. I'm pretty sure your VRO has an alarm as well as an alarm for the iol tank. If he didn't disconnect the wiring your alarm is going to sound when you run the motor.

I don't know about the alarms going off I think on my model it only has LOW oil and if I leave the oil full in the tank I shouldn't get that alarm should I? I was just gonna leave the tank in the boat.

mark

We know the boat is a 1985 Procraft but what year and model number is the engine? This would help in identifying the VRO pump that is on your motor and allow specific direction as to any wiring disconnects.

I would disable the remote oil tank alarm whether you leave it in the boat or not.Just two wires that are easily traceable to engine compartment.

On the three model numbers I see for the VRO pump on a 1984 90 hp Evinrude, there is no VRO alarm harness for oil pressure or fuel restriction alarm. This earlier model appears to have just been equipped with the low oil level alarm in remote oil tank. From 1986 and on, the VRO pump was equipped with an alarm harness, first the three wire, and then the four wire which added the fuel restriction alarm feature.

Just the two wires from the remote oil tank and that's it.I recommend testing the overtemp alarm periodically to insure that it works. You can do this two ways.If you have a side mount control, there should be a slot under the fast idle lever that you can insert a key or metal tab into, with the key in the "on" position. The overtemp alarm should sound.Another way to test is to have the key in the "on" position and locate the tan wire exiting the temp sensor under the motor cover and peel back the insulating sleeve and touch wire to ground.Alarm should sound.
