I have a 16' Dixie boat with 70 HP evinrude motor and the motor doesnt seem to open up like it should. at idle it idles low and sometimes dies after a while unless you pull up the warm start. it takes off fine when u push full throttle it kinda misses a few seconds then picks up speed but it doesnt tact up like it should i dont think. seems to me it should be tacting alot higher rpm's. i have had this boat for 2 years and its done that since i got it. boat will only run like 20mph. is 20mph sound about right for a 16' 70HP? also it seems to drink gas bad. 6 gallons dont last hardly no time. 2 batterys, 450lbs people and 6 gallons of gas.

What have you done to determine what is wrong?

Did this engine ever perform properly for you?

Do a search for power loss.

Good luck. :)

Hi Miichael....

Let me throw some more questions at you to go along with JB's.

What year is the engine? Please post model number if you don't know.

Have you ever had a tune up done to this engine including sync/link and decarb?

What kind of rpms are you getting at WOT? It's possible that the prop is incorrect for the application. This is why I asked about the rpms.

Is the engine running cold? This would help cause some of the "miles/gal" problem. At idle, you should be able to put your finger on the flat place right behind the top of the head. It should be very warm but not to the point that you have to jerk your finger away. If it's running cold, it is possible the tstat is stuck open.

That's enough for now to get ya' going so keep us posted on what you find.

One more thing....don't get frustrated, just keep at it.

is there like something i can maybe hook to fuel line and run the engine off the bottle and clean the carbs? like a fuel injection cleaner for a car? or do u have to take them all off and wash them out ?
