I just got a used 1978 85 hp evinrude v4. It starts hard, and I'm not sure I'm putting the warm up lever in the correct postion when the motor is cold or hot. When it's cold, I have been pulling it up almost all the way. What position do I put it in when the engine is warm? I ran the motor for 2 hours yesterday on the CT River, and it ran great, but when I turned it off, I couldn't get it started and my friend had to tow me back to the launch.I'd appreciate any advice.Thanks.

Your motor's not running normally.

Typically, on that model you'd run the warmup lever about 2/3 way up (depending on adjustment) for cold idle. Once the engine's warmed-up, the lever goes all the way down & stay's there.

The most obvious culprit is dirty carbs. If you can post back with some more symptoms, we might be able to do a more accurate diagnosis.

If it is the carbs, that motor's one of the easier ones to remove & clean the carbs on, if you have some motor experience. Definitely get a manual first though.

Be aware that if one cylinder runs lean due to carb gunk it can heat up & burn out (2strokes overheat when run lean). So be a little careful on the rebuild, particularly being sure all 4 mainjets . The 85 is a great motor, very understressed, fat midrange for skiing (almost same displacement as the 140).

I'm going to try to run it after work tonight. I'll play around with the positioning of the warm up lever. I think I might have tried to start it yesterday when it was warm with the warm up lever all the way up.

It should start fine, warm, with the lever up - it's just that it's not necessary. It'll rev up too high & make onlookers nervous. :)

What happened when it wouldn't start? Just cranked without starting? Totally dead with no coughs, etc.?

Put the warm up lever about 2/3 up last night, it fired right up. Now I just need to take it down to the river to see what happens when it's warm. Thanks for the suggestions.
