Hi, Twick.

The spring is replaceable, but you need a manual to do it right, and safely.

You will need the model number to get any help with parts.

Try www.twincityoutboard.com

Good luck. :)

Hi Twick
Depending where the spring broke, you may be able to aneal the end and bend it so you can still use it. Most of the time money wise it is about a wash to repair or replace used. The plus side of repair is that you have a new spring and your starter unit is serviced. All known good.

Hello.
Those coils are really quite generic. You might want to take the thing to a lawnmower repair man. That would probably save you time and money.
Good luck.

Re: New Pullstarter for '56 Johnson 10hp

Thanks guys. I emailed twin city for parts and also called a few lawnmower repair shops. Most shops say they cannot help when I even mention "outboard". I try to see if I can bring in to find like item replacement but still don't get too far.
Any other ideas on where I could order the whole pullstarter unit used or even a recoil spring on-line?
Thanks for the help. My trolling motor and back are getting too much use ;>)...

You can get new springs through a dealer. Same spring was used for a long time in the 22-cube 18-25hp series, and later 25-35hp manual start models. Not expensive, but definitely get a manual to make sure you replace it correctly. It's not rocket science, but it'll help make things go smoother...
- Scott

Hi Twick
The orginal part# for the spring is 307573, This number supercedes to #395460. This should get you what you need. Quit often some of the newer dealers do not have parts manuals that will go back as far as 1956. So the kid at the parts counter will tell he don't have any parts. With out a part# he could be standing knee deep in them, and still say I don't carry parts for a unit THAT OLD. The same thing goes for bearing houses and lawn mower/small engine shops. The trick is to try and speak there lingo and never answer the question, "Dah what's it offa?". They never ask that question when they want to help you. They ask so they can quickly say nope and get you out of their hair.
