Hi Nasty
This is a question that only you can answer. You will need to determine the condition of this thing. Check the L/U do a compression test. If the motor is basicly mechanicly sound and just needs serviced and touched up. I would think so. These are great little fishing motors. I would plan on spending approx. a $150. to get this unit in top shape. This price would include a repair manual. This is also just an estimate, may be a little less, might be alot more. I figure I spend adout that much on any used motor regaurdlees of age. this figure us for parts only and supplies only.

mornin'nasty,

"is it worth it?" is a tough onr to answer. Depends on the condition of the motor & Too subjective to answer from here. You might want to take a look at this web page to get a good idea of where you are and where to start.
These motors are pretty "straight foward" and many parts arereadily available at you omc/bomb dealer, Napa, web sites.

http://www.precisionserv.com/Outboards/Revitalization.htm

Good Luck
HAVE FUN.

To add a little more to the fire... As noted, only you can decide if it's worth it. Those motors were solid performers and with minimal maintenance did very well for a long time. Basic design was made for a generation with only minor improvements as technology advanced. I've got a '54 Johnson 5.5 - same basic motor - and it runs like a top. My munchkin runs it and starts it without a problem. It does everything I would want a new 6hp outboard to do, probably burns marginally more fuel, and although I do mix the gas richer than a new one would take, I can buy an awful lot of gas & oil for the difference in initial cost between what I've got in that motor and a new one. I've replaced everything that is likely to give a problem - ignition components, water pump, hoses, etc. Pretty much the only things that would give me a problem with it are the same things a new motor would be affected by - water pump aging, gumming of carbs, wear of parts, etc. I started with a basically sound motor, which helps a lot. Buy one that has been abused and a whole host of problems may arise. It can be a crapshoot, but if you do your homework, you'll come out ahead...
- Scott

Re: 1965 Johnson, is it worth it?

Hey, i have a 1965 Johnson. What Horsepower is your motor? Mine is a 60 and it is on a 1965 glassmaster, 15 footer. I am currently working on motor as it will not start because of no spark. Can someone tell me what color the kill wire is, if there is one. I am still waiting on my manual and am anxious to get this baby running. No spark and it is driving me nuts. also could someone answer me this...points and condenser...can i buy a generic set at the auto parts store? and, the battery + wire runs to a solinoid looking thing...actually looks to me like a voltage regulater? am I right or what. This thing, to me looks like an old ford voltage regulator that would be on drivers side toward the front of a ford truck. can I buy a generic one of these at the auto store? thanks for any info.

Todd

feel free to e-mail me todd@toddfricke.com thanks
