I am wondering if you know how fast a 35 horse 1958 evinrude would go pushing a 12 foot boat????

Re: Probably the dumbest question

Way too fast for me, unless the boat is also 12 feet wide.

Re: Probably the dumbest question

Not a dumb question, Felix, but 35HP on most 12 footers is a really dumb idea.

My calculator says, for a 12' tinny semi-vee, (  ) about 60mph. Of course that would require about a 25" pitch prop.

PLEASE don't try it.

Well Felix,

If you DO try it I hope you're able to report the results ! :) Sounds like a BAD idea to me !

I currently run a '61 Evinrude Lark III 40 hp on a 16' aluminum fishing boat. It moves along at about 28-30 mph according to a GPS. That's not blazing speed but PLENTY for a fishing boat.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE !!!

I have a 40 hp mark 55e on a 14" Lone Star Malibu (right now I'm restoring the motor) and it sure did run that boat! Scared the sh** outa my girlfriend.

Well, I once put a '72 25 HP Evinrude on a 12' aluminum semi-v and it got plenty squirrely. I don't know how fast it was going, but I came back at reduced throttle, I guarantee you. Let us know how thw 35 turns out if you decide to try it anyway.

It ain't gonna go that fast

You'll be lucky to get 40 MPH (that means a 150 lb skinny little guy driving) with the rite prop and all the conditons just perfect. that motor is only about 30 Hp at the prop. More likely about 35-40 MPH. Fast but not dangerous if the boat is strong enough.

I hope you have a GPS. I'd like to know how fast you can get it. What's your prop pitch?

Re: Probably the dumbest question

Okay Okay, Calm down everyone!!! I am not experimenting at all here. I have a 1964 12 Foot Fiberglass Runabout it has a 1958 35 hp Evinrude outboard motor. I assure all of you that the OBC plate on the boat states that you can have up to a 35 HP motor only.
The last post sounds most correct that it could go around 40 with skinny guy driving and the right pitch prop. My husband and I together bring in quite a bit of weight so I am positive it would never go that fast. I was just curious if there was a general speed that a 35 hp motor would go. So, In light of that, I appreciate all your concern, but not experimenting...

Not really very nice to suck us in with tidbits and leave out critical facts, Felix.

Of course, if you are rated for 35, then 35 is safe.

How fast it can go will depend on the total weight, bottom type and whether it is ideally propped for that combination.

My calculation, noted above was for a 200# 12' flat bottomed semivee with 300# of pilot and gear, AND an ideal prop.

Your boat obviously weighs a LOT more, in which case I have to agree with FlyBoyMark. 35mph.

Re: Probably the dumbest question

Not every "12-footer" is a flat-bottom tin can. There were a lot of little sporty runabouts built "back in the day" that could easily handle up to 50hp. Think Glasspar G3s, GW Invaders, etc...
- Scott

Back in the 50's I used to drive a ski boat for a guy. It was a 12' Paceship rocket, molded plywood, with a 35 Evenrude. You had to climb up on the front deck to get it to plane off.
It would only go 35 mph(without skiers of course:).
35 mph back then was really flying:)

Re: Probably the dumbest question

I would take the manufacturers recommendation and utilize the speed vs. weather equasion. In other words... In a car on a curve on a paved road, the posted speed limit is 35, given the weather condition and tire wear, as well as the vehicles "ratio of stability" one can safely negotiate that curve on dry pavement, 75 deg. day, humidity approx. 80% with a vehicle in good condition at approximately 70 miles per hour. Thusly, backwards math suggests you might wanna try a 70HP motor on that baby, she ought to really fly then. HA HA

Back in the dark ages, I had a 14'9" Yellowjacket with a Merc. Direct Reversing 800 and a 1:1 Speedmaster l/u. It flew.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Probably the dumbest question

Back in the late 40's my dad and I built a small plywood fishing boat that was about 10' long, and about 5' wide, and lite as a feather (cartopper). The local lake (a natural lake about 1/2 mile wide, and a mile long).
All the hot shots would put in at the public beach, and show off running in circles a just off shore of the swimming beach (when they were running). Well this skinny lil 75lb teenager could get out there, open her up, crawl forward and get the front end down, and then keep up with the best of them, in the little home made skimmer, and a 9.9hp Martin. You had to be carefull getting that front end down to a plane, as sometimes it wanted to be a submarine.
This was before big daddy government made up all of the rules and regulations. we had no numbers, life vest, or gas tanks, they were built in.
Walt :D :D :D

Re: Probably the dumbest question

I don't know if you guys are still checking up on this one or not, but i've got a 60's model 10' GW INvader with a 70 h.p. on the back. i traded in the 28 horse which probably did aroung 30 mph. now it goes about 55 or 60, but i'm only running a 15 in. pitch on it. lots of work to do this summer to get it going faster....many plans in store including a larger pitch prop. This goat was originally rated for a 50 horse, but it's built like a tank, and i know it can handle the power......it's just up to the driver if he can handle it ;)
