198? or 9? johnson 15hp motor runs odd help!!!

i have a motor that one day all the sudden started dieing like it was running out of gas.It will start with the choke out you have to push it in will start to die pull it out runs good push it in when it starts to die and it revs up then back down till it dies. It will not idle.You can manage to put it in gear before it dies and throttle it all the way runs like a scaled dog (runs great out of water). Put it in water and force on prop and do the same thing push in and engage it and it runs like you barely have it throttled??? need some help where to look have carb off and fuel pump thing off do i need to replace these or rebuild them or should i look elsewhere. Have been told it is reeds or valves?? please help poor boy trying to fix his motor have good mech knowledge if i can be pointed in the right direction.Thanks please email me to mavrick_jlr@yahoo.com

Can you post a ser# and a model#, will make it easier to determine what motor you have.<br /><br />I would start with rebuilding the carb, and the fuel pump. Check and make sure that your fuel line is good. Also if you can, check your compression and spark.

thanks for reply the model is J15eenm and serial G03138399. i will go to my local dealer and check on rebuild kits any other help will be great not sure of year???

my 88 15hp johnson had the same problem. would run on the choke for awile, and if put in gear and throtled on it would go, and even manage to get the choke in ( wile WOT ) cleaning the carb solved the problem. I had one teeney tiney oriface cloged in mine, and that was all there was to it. I managed to get mine apart without killing the gaskets, I did not put a rebuild kit in, just cleaned it, and wire reamed all orifaces. The one that was cloged was in the center area of the float, it had a tube conecting the oriface from the carb body to the plastic thing in the center of the float with a little rubber hose. ( had to remove hose to clean )<br /><br />So the clean the carb advice is most likely the right advice here, Mine runs almost like new now. Perhaps if I had actualy instaled a carb kit it might run like new, but it is close enough for me,, FIres right up, idles down low wile under load, and planes my boat at half throttle. thanks for reply picked up rebuild kit today will do that put new tank with hoses, ordered a rebuild kit for fuel pump. I hope this works.
