When looking for the exhaust leak on my 1980 70 hp Johnson I removed the split cover below the power head. The housing that bolts to the bottom of the power head is cracked all the way around. Is this something that can be fixed by welding or do I need to start looking for a good used housing?

Re: cracked motor

Hi Will
Probably the best thing to do is find a good used exhaust housing. Some times things can be welded. It sure wouldn't hurt ask around and get a real pro's opinion. There is no room for error on this job, it has to accurate when done. If it can be done at all. I have a 1953 3hp evin in the shop right now that the powerhead snapped off at the transome clamp. I welded it myself, more or less to see if I could get away with it. After a little filing and dremmel work all checks out good. Noow for the real test. I think if I were in your shoes I would go for the used one. Loosing an old 3hp overboard no big deal. The same thing happend to you with your motor could spell disaster. The good news to all this, at least you know what the problem is. Try to make the best of this bummer, I think your about to meet some interesting new friends (scrounging for parts). Good luck.

Re: cracked motor

I talked to a local welder he said he could TIG weld the cracks and assured me that they would not break. The housing wasn't cracked all the way around just the front 4 bolts. Anyone here had the extension housing TIG welded before? Did it work?

Thanks
Will Vaughan

What should I expect to pay for a used extension housing? If the welder thing doesn't work out.

Re: cracked motor

Hi Will
The cost of used parts depends. Depends on how bad and how fast you want them. I just picked up a 150hp Force the other day. I found it in pieces laying in a ditch, didn't cost anything. With out seeing what you have in damage it's impossible for me to really make a call. If your welder says he can do this then go for it. Some of these guys are real artisans. I had a fellow tig weld the prop shaft end of a Merc mark6 l/u once. I told him it couldn't be done.Well he made a liar out of me and I,m happy about it.

Re: cracked motor

The part in question is the long case that goes between the powerhead and the lower unit. The outer case not the inside one the exhaust goes through.

Re: cracked motor

This would be the outer exhaust housing, correct? This is the part that all the suspension attaches to and your lower unit bolts up, right? This is why you have the exhaust leak? Like I said, If the man says he can do it and it is stright, true and strong when he is done with it, then go for it.
