ok, i've got the - "priming the bulb", "turn key to 'on' position", hold it in for count of eight (to prime), turn key to 'start' position. question is, do i continue to hold the key "in" when i turn to 'start' position? if so, how long? if not, do i release "push" before i turn to 'start' position? hold it in AS i'm turning key to start position??
it's a 1996 evinrude 115 ocean pro (2 stroke, carb.).

also, i've heard i should listen for a "click" to make sure the "prime" is working. if i dont hear it, can i manually do it myself? is it that red "pet **** " back there (it's in the '6 o'clock position now)? what is the procedure for doing it manually, if so??
lots-a questions, i know. but thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, continue holding the key in, while starting. Typically it's held in until the engine starts. Leave the red valve alone, unless you're trying to rope start it.

-John

OMC's seem a little cold natured to me. You may have to push the key back in momentarily until it warms up a little. The red lever is the manual primer valve, used to prime the motor in emergency rope starts. It's also the Schrade valve fitting for injecting decarbonizer. Always leave it in the RUN position unless rope starting.

I also have the same problem. 1995 Evinrude 115. Tough on cold starts. I follow the procedures listed, minus the holding the key in while cranking. Instead I'v been fast throttling in neutral. Would holding the key in while cranking replace the fast throttle technique I'v been using.

Thanks in advance,

Hello Jack, I have cold starting problems also. Can you tell me where the RUN position is on the manual primer valve? I had no idea what that red valve was for. Thanks for the info. Allen

Re: evinrude starting procedure

I think having the warmup lever (or "Fast Throttle") 1/2-3/4 of the way up before you start it is not a bad step to throw in the process. Once you get your particular sequence down, and you'll find your own magic steps, stay consistent and both you and the motor will be happy.

If you don't hear the "click" then you might consider diagnosing what's up with the auto choke. More than likely a silenoid issue, and something that's easy to repair. That "click" is very pronounced and easy to hear as soon as you push the key "in".

Re: evinrude starting procedure

Your 1996 has QuickStart electronic starting system. Raising the fast idle lever will over ride the QuickStart. The correct starting procedure is to push the key while turning the engine over this will cause the primer to inject extra fuel inot the engine. Once running you may have to briefly push the key in several times to give the engine more fuel until it runs smoothly. The owners manual will tell you that the fast idle lever should only be advanced to help clear a flooded engine. Although I find raising it after the engine has started will help keep it running.
