Can someone please tell me what year Evinrude 150XP engine I have? Model number is E150STLCEM. Also I need to buy a repair manual. Which one is best? I will be needing to replace the clutch dog first. Then rebuild the powerhead if the first part goes good. I need a manual that is detailed in instructions for teardown and putting back up.

Cant get it to go forward drive in the water but on the trailer it does. Makes a terible noise and shakes the throttle handle badly in the water. Reverse works fine. # 5 cylinder is 15 lb.s lower on compression than the rest. Squirt a few drops of oil in and compression comes back up to same as others.

Recomendations and comments please. I have rebuilt chevy engines many times but new to boats. Any helpfull hints would be welcome.

Thanks a lot people,

ChevyReb

1989.

Try disconnecting the shift cable and shifting by hand when its in the water. You really dont even have to take it off the trailer. Put it in gear by hand and give her a touch of throttle. It may just be a streached cable or simply out of adjustment.

I personally prefer the OE (Evinrude) manual but the ones sold here are OK.

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude 150XP

The "CE" in your model number indicates a 1989 year model. We closed our dealership and still have many parts and service literature in stock for Evinrude/Johnson engines. I do not have a service manual left for your engine. Parts are being sold for 1/2 of the mfg. suggested list price so you can save some money if we still have what you need. Re: Evinrude 150XP

I tried that last night and with the linkage disconnected I could manually put the lever in forward and then I could not turn the prop, as it was fully engaged. Moved it to reverse and worked good there as well. I then put the lever in forward gear and adjusted the wheel on the linkage until it lined up with the bolt hole and put the nut on and the cover and bolt near the front. used the throttle at this point to go in forward and reverse and it seemed to be working as I could not turn prop. Took it to the nearby pond and tried it on the trailer, still made a bit of noise for a second or two, about like it does going in reverse normally, then seemed to be engaged. Took it off trailer then and went out stopping and starting and forward and reverse several times. After a few minutes of this it started grinding again, at this point I 'm thinking what bad luck. So I went back to the hill and took the linkage loose again and moved the adjustment about an 1/4 to 3/8 of inch more. Took it out again and it really felt solid engaging in forward. Made slight quick noise going into reverse, but it always has done that.
Stopped and started for about 20 minutes, using reverse now and then. It seems to be OK now, absolutely no noise at all moving into forward.
My only concern now is if I can trust it to go out in the big Lake. Do you think this fixed it or will it decay back to grinding after a little use? Is it common for these things to require adjustment now and then, or is the clutch dog nearing end of life?

Thanks Dhadley!

Retired man, You have mail, where are you located?

ChevyReb

I would bet your cable is streaching. Not a big deal compared to replacing the gears. You should be able to center the cable in neutral and have plenty of travel for forward and reverse. The trunion (adjusting part on cable) should be somewhere near the middle.

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude 150XP

I have the exact same engine. Just had a problem on the lake this past week and my compression showed #5-85 and the other 5 cylinders at 95 and 100. It appears dirt and grit are in my #5 after taking the head cover off. Did you get a manual? which one, from where, and did you like it?

Kent
