Keith.... I assume that the alarm you speak of is a steady constant beep (overheating). If that engine's running over 140° with no thermostats, the waterpump is failing (or has failed), or the water passageways are clogged, or the water deflectors that are located between the top and bottom cyl... and also between the bottom cyl and the block have swelled and are causing a water restriction.<br /><br />It is mandatory that engine has thermostats installed, otherwise the pistons will score along with the cylinder walls.<br /><br />I strongly recommend that you drop the lower unit, dismantle and inspect the water pump, and replace the thermostats and water bypass valves.<br /><br />If the engine still overheats after having a new water pump installed (if one is needed), then I suggest that you remove the cylinder heads to inspect the water deflectors.
